I don't know about the yellow stuff, but I used the black 3M super weatherstrip adhesive. It went on exactly as you say; apply to both surfaces, let it dry to tacky (10 or so minutes), then press in place. Worked great. I believe the instructions even said to do it this way. Just do a foot or two at a time, rather than all at once.
