Replacing my water pump today an of course, taking way longer than I thought. Anyways, is this correct? Found this passage behind the water pump when I was cleaning the contact surface. What is it for if correct?
Thanks!

That is a drain hole for the day in the future when the water pump starts leaking internally. For now, just keep it open when you do your install. Then hope you never see a water leak coming from it. However, if it ever does start leaking in there, you will want that hole so you'll know it is time to replace the pump.

Thanks for the reply! That's what I figured but wanted to know for sure. So everything is back and all filled up with fluids. No leaks so far but had a weird sound when I put the car in reverse. Made sure my ATF was full a operating temp. Have to investigate another time. I'm hoping it's just the transmission cooling lines banging onto each other.

Yep. That's the "indicator" for when your pumps backplate has rusted through.....
