I have a 65 coming out of the body shop on monday & the last thing they are painting is the engine compartment. I told them to go with a smigloss black but wondering now, what others used & how happy they are with the outcome

I painted it myself and used Krylon 1613 / semi gloss black. I'm very happy w/the results. PM me if you would like some photos.

The engine compartment itself should be a semi-flat or eggshell black. I have used regular enamel with hardener and a flattening agent for years. I always mix to the "eggshell" mixture listed on the flattener container. It has worked great for me for years. Next car I'm going to use a single stage urethane. I had a chance to experiment with some and it hardens in 1/3 the time of enamel and seems to be much more durable. Cost is about the same as well.

Here's a pic of my '71 after the engine compartment detail...

Eastwoods Underhood Black, its a high solids spray bomb, over Eastwoods Self Etching Primer (I was down to bare metal).
