It's the blob of metal at about the 4 o'clock position on the bellhousing. What purpose does this blob serve other than to get in the way of long tube headers? Anyone know?

Probably some kind of locator when the housing was machined. Nothing a hacksaw couldn't handle.

I'd worry about a header designed so poorly that little tab was a problem.

I don't think they were designed for use on an automatic car, but I'm eventually swapping out to a T5, so I want to make the transmission fit the headers rather than the headers fit around the tranny. The kickdown lever on the gas pedal linkage was square in the way of one of the primaries, so that had to go too.
