After pulling my motor for a rebuild, I've discovered that it is a 1964 289 (possibly out of a Fairlane). Engine code is C40E 6015C with a date code of 4C17.
In my search for new parts, I mainly see listings for 65 289's. What are the differences between the two. Are that parts interchangeable? What things do I need to look out for when buying parts for this motor?

Thanks,
Dayne

64.5 has a 5 bolt bellhousing . 65 has a 6 bolt bellhousing . 64.5's have a different timing cover that either has a oil fill port or a rubber plug if the valve cover has a hole for oil .
Pretty much everything else is the same , unless the engine has a road draft tube .

Timing Chain and gears are different. Can be interchanged to the newer style timing chain and gears. I believe the camshaft retainer must be changed. The newer style gears and chain are thicker than the 64 style and would rubb through the timing cover.
