I hate to bang on it with a screwdriver, but is it the only way to remove?

Mine, like everyones, is nice and seated after all the years. 1965. 8".

I like to drill a small hole in the metal part of it then thread in a sheet metal screw about half way. Then you can use the screw as a pry point to lever the seal out.
Of course you can use whatever kind of screw you have around. Sometimes you have to make couple of attempts before you get a solid "bite". Look closely at your new seal to see where the metal part is so you know where to aim your drill.

Similar to Gypsy's method I have punched a hole using a very sharp tool like an awl. It deforms the metal inward and gives the screw a bit more material to bite into.

If you don't have a seal puller with the hawk bill, a slim claw hammer will sometimes grab em.
