My 66 Mustang has the original wheel covers. I like them and am trying to keep car as original as possible. They are old and banged up a bit so I’m debating on a new set of the exact type from CJ Pony Parts (they have nice replicas).

My only worry is how does a guy pound them onto the wheel without damaging or scratching them? Would a rubber mallet work? My current ones are so beat up I don’t have to be very careful with them. But if I get new ones then I’ll probably baby them a bit.

The reason I may need to remove them occasionally is I can’t get any air into the valve stems, at least on the front tires. Those stems just don’t project far enough out of the wheel cover so it requires removing the wheel cover to get to them. Thanks for any info!

I recently bought a couple from NPD. I have had no issues installing them with a rubber mallet (just like was done in the 60s)

problems problems problems.....they also sell valve stem extensions you can just screw onto your existing valve stems, until you get new tires one day and then have the longer ones installed. Nice looking car and I do like the 66 wheel covers....lets not go crazy and upgrade to spinner wheel covers while you're at it!

That’s why I love this forum. Had no idea on these valve extensions I will check that out. Thanks for all of those who provided feedback!

If you’re trying to keep it stock, do not change them, just clean and leave the originals as they are.!

Running the 53 year old originals on my son's Emberglo car and MyFirstCar originals are in the shed. I have always used my hands to make sure I have them started straight and bump them with both hands 180° apart, move my hands 90° and hit em again, then bump em on all around so I don't dent em. Same thing for the stainless beauty rings for my original Styled Steel wheels.

Yep. I use only the heal of my hands or the side of my fist.

Used to have the hubcaps come off now and again and fortunately I was able to get them back except for the one on the freeway; too dangerous. Found out you can carefully bend the metal tangs back out and they will grab and stay on.

Rubber Mallet... Make sure that the rubber has some "give" in it though... The rubber in a rubber mallet hardens with age...and alos some mallets have harder made rubber than others...if you can believe it..

Both of my '65 and '66 Convertibles both have the 14" Wire Wheel Hubcaps with Spinners....Same as pictured below.. I love them. They can take a beating... Never lost one in 30+ years.

The important thing to remember when putting any hubcaps on is to check the Metal Tabs on the insides of the caps before you put it on to make sure that they are not bent in to far..and then after you put them on...to go around the entire perimeter of the wheel twice and make sure that there are not any gaps between the cap and the wheel... and you'll never lose one unless you are driving and doing jumps like the "Duke Of Hazzard"....lol....

I, too, ONLY use my hands when installing my wire wheelcovers on my '66 Sprint. As long as you maintain the wheelcover being parallel with the rim, it is pretty easy. Thanks for not calling them hubcaps, as hubcaps cover hubs & wheelcovers cover the entire wheel. Dean

I have got your hubcap. I was driving on the freeway, morning commute, and traffic slowed to a stop. I was in the left lane, and looked over, and there was a Mustang wire spinner hubcap laying on the shoulder. It was undamaged and still had the Ford label. Literally just opened the door, leaned over, picked it up, and drove on.

I put a set of Crager-Keystone wheels on my '66 years ago because I couldn't stop the hubcaps from rotating on the wheels. They would bend the valve stems over. Bending the tabs out didn't help.
