When I put the stroker in, what tranny?

I have decided on a 393W stroker..... should I keep the C-4 in, and have it beefed up, or go with a T-5? I have always liked manuals, but Ive never owned one. Would it be too much to drive on the street, or would a automatic be better?

The 5 speeds are nice, but for a beefed up 393 I'd opt for the tremenic (although the t5 behind my Mexican block has handled its power for 3 years now.) I have had a lot of very happy customers who went with the 5 speed over their 3/4 speeds and autos....its worth checking out.
If your car is currently an automatic, I'd stay auto. If your willing to wait and save up for the right automatic, call the Lentech people and tell them you want a street automatic.
If you spend the money a C4 can be made almost bullet-proof. Since your car is already AT, likely the easiest and cheaper choice. A good AOD wouldn't cost a heck of a lot more.
A T5 can't really be beefed up much and is generally considered incapable of handling a 400 HP engine for long. A Tremec would be a better choice.
As for preference, I've gotten to where I hate a manual in a daily driver. But for weekend fun, a 5 speed can't be beat.
I would agree with the aod overdrive automatic, there are alot of options for different horsepower ranges.the 5 speeds are fun to drive but do get tiresome after a while and are not good for cruising.
If you are going to have a large cam in there and a double pumper and a torque peak up in the high 4000's or more and run it on the street you should stay with a manual transmission and get a bullet proof clutch. I don't think a run of the mill T5 will handle what it looks like you are building. You will need something quite a bit stronger. Depending on how deep you go with the gears and how much you're going to drive it a top loader 4 speed will work or for an OD you probably should get a Tremec.
Dave,
Tell us the rest of the story....I read your post about getting a 351W/trans from a 80's vehicle...

What type of build-up are you going to do with the stroker?
What changes will you be making to the car?
What are you going to do with it?
What type of performance driving do you prefer? (eg, drag racing, circle track, road racing, auto x, etc)
What is your budget for the engine/drivetrain?

Get back to us...

Given what I know, a well-built C4 or AOD with a 11" converter would be my first instinct...subject to change, of course..*G*

Well I would either go TKO or a built c4. Im going to probably going TKO or a jericho for my 408.

Take it from someone in T-5 hell... go with an auto. My modified SVO has killed 2 Tremecs, looks like a TKO would live but... It's getting a C-4 custom built by... ME! Lentec is a great unit... it has a high-end price too! I have an 8 second '66 Mustang... BTW that's a 1/4 mile time, runs mid/low 1.20 60' times... with a C-4. Put it in when I grew tired of replacing C-6's every week. A fresh C-4 will work forever as long as you keep it cool & clean. I have mountains of C-4 mods from mags & from Performance Automatic I can share with you if you want to do it yourself.

If you don't think the T-5 will hold up, go with the 4sp out of a 69/70 351 car !!!!
Sounds like a job from the Tremec if you go with a manual.
