I have a 66 mustang which does not have a windshield washer pump. it has a cable connected to the windshield wiper motor which is just cut off once it enters the engine bay. does it matter which pump i get? or is there a specific one that goes with my wiper motor?

66 used both 65 and 66 style pumps. Either one will work.

I would, however, use the one correct for my single or dual speed wipers.

no, car hasnt been running for a while. it doesnt have a battery in to test either. All i see are the little nubs where the wipers go but how would i find out what speed the wipers are?
Wiper switch will be either 2 position (single speed) or 3 position (two speed).

So does 1 or 2 speed wiper have anything to do with which pump is used?? I have seen 65 pumps on 66.

The wiring harness is different so the dedicated wire for the washer pump comes from a different spot on the switch, has a spade terminal on the pump end for the single speed, two wires on the pump for dual speed. The pumps are easily identified.
