I have been told that the "shifting fork"? in my 4sp. toploader is worn and that is why it gets stuck in a gear and won't come out. Anyone ever heard of this ? If so, are we talking major $$ OR am I being given the "gears' so to speak by a mechanic looking to retire early?

Very possible the fork and other things are the problem. I had my toploader repaired to the tune of $290.00 about a year and a half back. That was for a new second gear (eaten alive), new synchro (also toast), new counter shaft (corroded and badly worn), and an input shaft bearing (cracked bearing cage), not to mention a couple of missing detent pawls. I could see the mauled second gear, synchro and cracked bearing cage, so the rest of it was no surprise. I shouldn't think your problem would be major dollars, but allow for the possibility there is/are some hidden problems.
