Regardless,,,
I think you are a “lucky guy” and also a patient one for not just taking a “run it and see what happens“ approach..
With all that “popcorn” in there it’s a wonder some of it didn’t get tossed through your trans case.
Well done moving into your diagnosis slowly. 👍

Heck if I know. Grasping for straws here. What is apparent, there is some nasty metal on metal going on after the engine starts. So I was thinking the starter gear when retracted is not retracted enough to get out of the way of the flywheel gears. So shim pulls it back some.
I’ve done this. Eventually got a starter with the correct bendix.

update 9/13/22
I have now reinstalled the new starter, installed a new starter solenoid...wired exactly as the old one was wired, and installed a new starter wire (with the insulation). So the car starts right up !

However, I still hear an uncomfortable amount of metal noise now when the engine is running... but honestly it has been a long time since I owed an old V8, so maybe it's okay. Here is the video. I only left it running for less than a minute twice now. Appreciate any ears/thoughts on this. Thank you.

I would not have let it run that long.

THanks. Any harm starting it without cover? Maybe it will kick out something? Could put down some barrier (cotton towels) to avoid projectiles/ricochet? Bad Bad idea?

I am certain I removed everything I could see and get to earlier, which isn't to say something wasn't caught up above and is now loose. But it doesn't sound to me like a random object bouncing around either (I would sort of think it would be like a clothes dryer with a metal snap pinging around).

I could remove starter again, have someone turn crank bolt 360 and make sure nothing looks weird/stuck to teeth somewhere.

Any other way/ideas?

I can't remember if it's stick or auto. If stick, could you push the car and pop the clutch to start it without the starter. If no noise, then it's something with the starter.

See if you can fish a magnet around the back of the flexplate to grab any other "pieces" that may be "lurking".
Thanks, I'm going to do jack it back up and get the tools back out (I guess I should have known better than to clean up) and have another crack at it. To summarize, I should look for and try and fish out any remaining debris, use the crank bolt to spin the flywheel completely around (inspecting the little section at a time viewable from inspection plate), look for any torque converter bolts that may not be tight/protruding (which presumably would be pretty obvious/shiny from hitting whatever) and anything stuck between teeth of flywheel?

Anything else?

4) Is it conceivable that bouncing around on a truck for 1200 miles caused this whole thing? Or am I just a lucky fella.
Probably not the entire thing, but could have contributed for sure. My bosses VW Bus was trucked form San Fran to Indiana in an enclosed trailer. Upon delivery the dizzy had completely wiggled loose and other engine bolts had worked themselves out a bit.

Your bits in the bottom of the bell housing seem to have been there a while given the grease etc. on them. My $ is on other parts still floating around and/or wedged in a place that wont allow them to come free from w/out taking the trans out. Are there any fresh contact marks on the nose of the starter, converter bolts etc. that would indicate fresh contact? Did you hear the car run before buying it?

I went through this starter jazz but have a manual trans, so I needed the automatic trans starter. How dumb is that 🥴 My flywheel wasn't so lucky but has held up all summer.

Time to take another look at that bolt head we talked about before, though that one didn't appear to be hitting the same thing each time around. kip
