Kinda boring, kinda old hat. But since buying this '65 fb in November 2001 I had never actually calculated my mpg. Yesterday I filled up, went on a 240 mile round trip from Albany, CA, to Placerville (a little town on U.S 50 between Sacto and Lake Tahoe), all freeway miles, average speed about 75 mph. Returning home I filled up at the exact same pump, with the pump clicking off at 12.1 gallons. 240 miles/12.1 gallons = 19.8 mpg.
I was pretty surprised. I always thought I was getting only about 12 mpg. This un-rebuilt '66 289 burns about a quart of oil/1,000 miles. Cam and heads are stock C code. The PO added tri-Y's and Flow 40's, and I've added a Professional Products intake, a 500 cfm Edelbrock carb, a T-5, and a 3.55:1 gear.
Considering that many modern sedans with the 3-liter and up V6's fall in about this same mpg range, and that almost all light trucks and SUV's do too, we old car guys don't need to apologize to anybody for our gas mileage.
