I have a 1967 Mustang GTA coupe with a 289 A code motor. It was assembled in March 1967 at the San Jose plant. Can anyone tell me the correct decal placement under the hood particularly the air cleaner decals. Thanks in advance. If anyone has pictures please post that would be a great help.

First DON"T buy a decal kit. Those include a bunch of decals never used or incorrect for your application. Buy them individually and from a quality supplier. Currently for commercially sold decals and stickers find ESC decals. They are sold by many of the parts suppliers often marked "concours" while the other supplier is not

For your engine you will need the
  • Cubic inch for the top of the air cleaner
  • The replacement parts decal for the drivers side of the base
  • May or may not have a small rectangle air filter replacement sticker on the forward face of the base just to the drivers side of the snorkel

For the rest of the engine and compartment
  • Battery inspection (not available in reproduction form commercially
  • Engine ID sticker that identifies the type engine type, emissions, transmission and so on specific
  • Service decal - drivers side engine compartment - placement often dependent on when the car was built and sometimes if the car had AC
  • The brake fluid warning sticker on the master cylinder lid
  • There were other wire loom, spark plug & coil wire stickers and a thick paper label on the wire plug at the voltage regulator but it sounds like that is not your current focus

Sorry no know period pictures of San Jose built cars

Thank you very much you have helped me more than you can imagine. I have a rectangular autolite spark plug decal does that go on the drivers side air cleaner base 90 degrees from the 289 lid decal?

No that is one not typically found on unrestored examples from 67 at San Jose. No examples with even the shadow or adhesive that I've found or have pictures of though I understand they are commonly found in decal kits, shown on "restored" cars all over the place and allowed or required by some judging organizations.

Jeff : While this may be true for San Jose cars, just to add to the confusion, Mannel's book on Small Block V8's has a picture of an original 1965 Air Cleaner with the rectangular Autolite Spark Plug sticker, and notes that it was used through 1967 ? He also notes that the "Use Genuine Ford Parts" decal with the white background was used, sporadically, through 1968.
