1968 Non-Vacuum Tilt Column?

There is a guy parting out his 1968 Mustang about 2-3 hours away, and he says it came with a tilt column, but not a tilt-away column. I assumed that all 1968 tilt columns were vacuum-assisted tilt-away columns, but if what he says is true, it'd be pretty appealing. No complicated vacuum accessories and such, just a pure mechanical tilt.

Can anyone confirm that there were 1968 tilt columns without vacuum assist? Would they be any more reliable and less complicated, or do they too wear out and require extensive rebuilding?

AFAIK the only tilt offered from the factory on 1968 Mustangs was the tilt-away column. It is possible that the column your seller has is one of those with the "away" disabled or otherwise non-functional. The away function is triggered by a second pin switch in the driver's door jamb. Alternatively, it could be an aftermarket tilt column such as I-Did-It or Flaming River. Note that the factory column uses the turn signal stalk to activate the tilt function. The aftermarket as well as the GM and Chrysler tilt columns from that era have a separate tilt stalk. Given that these columns are 45+ years old, they are likely to need some refurbishing if they have not already been done. There is a guy in Santa Clara that does work on tilt away columns
Thanks, that's some food for thought. I guessed that the most likely thing was what you've confirmed -- the tilt-away option is probably just non-functional on this car. I also forgot about the two-in-one turn signal switch, which seems like a tricky design. The car in question looks all original and covered in dust, so I doubt it has an aftermarket column.

I may wind up with an Ididit after all, as it seems that after the initial purchase and restoration of an OEM tilt, I'd probably wind up spending the same amount on either.
