1969 Mach 1 with or without Tach Wire Harness Connector

The question I have is, can one look at the instrument wire harness connector for the instrument cluster and determine if the wire harness is configured originally with a factory Tach or not?
Background, recently obtained Mach 1, at least third owner, was given an extra cluster panel with tach that I was told was in car when seller picked up the fastback. Existing cluster panel did not basically work (some wiring throughout car not hooked up such as wipers and heater or just missing....)

My plan is build new cluster from scratch, have new deluxe woodgrain bezel now just need to determine is my wiring harness for a factory tach or not.

Marti report did not specify any info for my VIN.
Second owner also installed a MSD distributor which may also alter things as well and had a dash mount speed shift light and tach which I have removed.

Guidance on determining wire harness is for Tach or not, is greatly appreciated or where I can research for an answer. I have Ford Shop Manuals for 1969 which are hard for me to decipher details for Mustang builds

I have my factory Mach 1 (Shelby) dash wire harness out of my car and can help you identify if it is a tach harness or not. At work now so unless someone else can assist sooner, will have to be this evening before I can get to mine.

Did'nt all Mach 1's have Tach's?

Not all 69's had the tach. Fact, most did not.

JSR, Get a hold of Midlife on the boards, he restores harnesses, and I'm guessing could tell you easily what to look for.

That would make sense as mine is a 351/FMX and has no tach. I remember years ago wanting to put a tach in a truck I was fixing up and friends asked me why because it wasn't a manual.

So it seems not all Mach1's came with a factory tach. I will look up and contact "Midlife" and post an update once more is learned. in the mean time I will take a picture of the connector and hopefully those with a wired tach can determine the difference in pin/wire position in theirs versus mine.

In the meantime I will be installing the new Traction-LOK rear end, delivered yesterday. New 9" Housing (correct length versus what i have now) 3:70 ratio, new axles & bearing plus disc brakes w/ parking break from Quick Performance.com out of Aimes Iowa

See attached,............... I would also take a quick look at your alternator harness under the hood. if it has a 3-pin connector, its for use "with tach"

Do you have the tachometer? If so, cool. If not, think hard about this. If you can find a 1969 tachometer, it will likely run you about $1,000. Furthermore, it's iffy if said tachometer actually works. So, you spend a grand, find out it doesn't work, then send it off to someone who can maybe make it work again. Sure, a factory tach is cool, but for my 1970 Mach 1, I decided I'm going to install a hood tach. (It was a Ford, over the counter option.)

I can also confirm with absolute certainty that tachometers were optional for the 1969 and 1970 Mach 1 Mustangs. In fact, almost everything was an option. The person who ordered my car checked the option blocks for "Mach 1", "Shaker" and "Tinted Glass" and nothing else. Thus, my Mach 1 had drum brakes all around, manual steering, a 3-speed manual and a 351 Cleveland 2V with single exhaust and a shaker. Bizarre, yes. But as I said, everything else was optional so my car didn't have it.

The 1970 Mach 1 package included deluxe interior, extra sound deadening, aluminum rocker panels, honeycomb taillight panel, driving lights, twist hood locks, hood stripe, 351 2V engine (Windsor or Cleveland, depending on timing and happenstance) and a 9" open differential with a 3.00 gear. 4V carb, dual exhaust, disc brakes, 4-speed trans, Traction Lock or Detroit Locker, auto trans and tachometer were all optional.

In 1969 it was the same, but there was no aluminum rocker panels, driving lights, twist locks or honeycomb taillight panel. The '69 Mach 1 got stick-on side stripes and a blackout hood with hood pins.

I've even seen books stating the shaker option was only available with the 4V engine. My car and its Marti report are actual proof this is not true.
