I have several C5AE-6015E blocks/engines there seems to have been a casting change somewhere along the line, as the 65 block does not have the flat spot on the passanger side on the front of the #1 cylinder external wall the 66 (September date) and the HIPO block (November date) do. I have looked and can't find out what this area was used for as I can't find any block that had a stamp here. I also can't find a change in casting happened as all 289s were all to be cast the same .

Pad such as those were used very early for a single-letter code indicating engine displacement. That way it made it easy to identify whether you're pulling a 221, a 260 or a 289 from the rack as they all look the same, assembled. This is especially true for some engines that used the same block casting, like a bunch of FE's... No longer needed, it was removed from the mold.

Doesn't quite make sense as the early blocks 289 didn't have them (at least the ones that I have), but the later 289 blocks did (at least the ones I have). This seems to be the reverse of what you said as they were added not deleted. Maybe I misunderstood
