This is cross posted!
Alright guys I am new here, and this is a lengthy post but i want to be as detailed as possible so i can et the best advice, and thank you in advance! I am 21 years old and I own a 1965 Ford Custom 500 4 door. I bought the car 3 years ago when I was a Freshman in college. The car was all original when i bought it, one owner car before me, she only put 80k miles on the engine. I have slowly been tweaking things here and there (new brakes, new suspension and actually saved up and parents helped me and i purchased a new transmission for the car). I, obviously being a college student, do not have a ton of disposable income to put into the car but this summer after i graduate want to do a little bit of work to the engine.
The car has a 289 Ford Small Block with (what I believe is) the original Holley 350cfm 2 barrel Carb. The motor has NEVER been broke open. When i purchased it i replaced the air filter, changed the oil and filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, thermostat and corresponding gasket, had the radiator flushed, all leaks repaired, and then sanded and painted at the local radiator shop and i changed the hoses.
So, with all that said, this is where I need y'alls help. This summer after I graduate I am going to pull the engine from the car. My current plan is to do this and then lightly sand and pain the entire engine bay, change the fender aprons, replace the hose to the heating coils and lightly sand the steering box and brake booster and paint. As far as the engine goes the fuel pump is BAD, I believe this because my oil smells HEAVILY of gasoline, can't even smell the oil. So i am going to remove everything that bolts on! valve covers, oil pan, heads, water pump, etc... and replace everything with a FELPRO gasket kit set and replace the field pump with a Summit racing 8psi 110gph fuel pump. then degrease the whole engine and reaping everything.
What else can i do while i have everything out to increase the power, drivability, and looks? I have thought about replacing the old, beat rocker arms with new ones, same thing with the valves and or valve springs. I have thought about just selling the old carb and intake and get a new edelbrock 4 barrel carb and intake. I have though about electronic ignition or atleast a new nice ignition coil.
to sum it up. I probably can spend about 1,000 to maybe 1,500 over about 4 months on it!
