I currently have a 302 in my '69 Mustang. It has an Edelbrok Performer intake, Holley 650 double pumper carb, high flow oil pump, headers and dual exhuast. I'm thinking of adding Aluminum Heads and maybe a 2000 rpm stall torque converter. Any suggestions on who makes good heads?
Thanks,
Pete

How do you drive the car, ie daily, weekly?? Maybe you could swap to 351W heads?? Good luck and let us know what you decide!!

I'm not familiar with the heads you mentioned, but trick makes an excellent set up. I would also chat with camachinist about the cost of the trick versus redoing your heads. Sometimes its more cost effective vs hp gains to use the oem stuff. 302's are unique engines in that because of smog laws back then, they were really choked up regarding flow, but the engine has some incredible power potential and responds very well to head flow & cam mods.

Hi Pete,

Tell us the rest of the story....

Trans, rear, use, etc....

Heads....Personally, I like Edelbrocks for stock-style street cars...

Converter...Likely, you'll be more pleased with a 10" 2400-2800 rpm unit unless this is going to be a near-stock, low-rpm combo...

Carb....IMO, sell the DP to a racer and get a good vacuum secondary carb....trust me..

Thanks for referencing the rear gear and use...

I'll assume you're using a C4 trans...

Read this article on cylinder heads for more info and comparisons...

If you prefer to stay with cast iron, look for some early 351W castings...69-70...they do pretty well...

DP might work OK with gearing and a 10" converter but I still think a VS carb would work better...maybe a 650 Demon or an Edelbrock...

Get some Trick Flow heads. I got mine for $1300 with a 7/16" stud upgrade and 1.6 billet roller rockers from http://www.totalengineairflow.com/

As camachinist said, get the higher rpm stall, no streetability problems. Demon carbs are nice, I love mine. What sort of a cam are you running?

I'm not sure. I bought the car last year and the p.o. said there was a mild cam in it. I might have to pull the top end and check to see. What kind of h.p. do you think you're making?

If you go aluminum, I'd recommend Trick flows. I have them on my Cobra and they are excellent. If you are interested in 351W heads, I've got a pair of 1969 351W heads on my '68 Mustang. They have screw in studs, "non rail" early rockers, Crane springs, and low miles. I'd consider selling for a reasonable price. I've been wanted to put Trick flows on the car, because I think they'd work even better with the blower.

I dunno, 400 at the flexplate? I need to take it to the strip to get a good idea. I should be in the 13s. It climbs up to 110 real quick!
