I have been thinking more and more about the motor I am going to build for my 67 Coup.

Thanks to everyone here I have decided on a 351W over a 347 Stoker :pirate:

I am going to start looking for the block. I have found a few around my area and was going to go look at some of them this coming week.

Now I don't really care what is on the block since I figure I will replace all of it as my goal is to have 400+ HP.

But I know I will have to make sure the block is in good shape. Is there any way to make sure the block is good when it still has everything on in?

Im sure all of them will have rust on the blocks. Is there a way to tell when there is to much.

What are the signs of a bad block, other then there being a hole in the block.

Sometimes I will look for a grandmas car for a virgin engine that has not been rebuilt. A complete pull out is the best bet, it would be complete and not be subjected to the weather. Finding all the brackets can be a bitch if you buy an incomplete motor. I had a 315W on a pallet covered with tarps, and it still caught moisture. It had pitted cylinder walls so bad it needed 2 sleeves. Deal with the seller on some kind of backup plan like if the motor is no good after dissasembling, like a money back. Good luck!

If you can, I recommend getting a block from 72-74, the 69-74 block had a thicker casting in the webbing area, and they are a little more reliable and can hold more power, the 72 and newer have a taller deck (9.503 vs 9.480) The reason for the taller deck back in the day, was to lower the compression ratio without havening to change the pistons and other things. If you plan on using stock 351W heads, stick to the 69-70 if you can, they have larger valves.
