my neighbor has a '69 sportroof. he has an opportunity to buy a 4.6 out of a lincoln, but he's under the impression that the entire firewall has to be cut out. is this true? what other modifications would be necessary to install this motor? same question for the aod that's behind it. thanks.

I don't believe the firewall would have to be cut. The shock towers may have to have a few inches cut off of them. Everything else would be find but the transmission, as far as I know, the Mod motors have a different bellhousing then the standard ford.

It should, however I have not done this myself. Im not sure how big the tranny tunnel is in a 69/70, and I am sure you would have to make a custom tranny cross-member. As far as making it run, you would have to transfer all the computer and fuel injection devices from the lincoln. Basically, the whole front clip.

I think Mustang Monthly did one a while back. One of the mags did anyway. Few things I remember, you will have to build an oil pan and pickup. No one makes it. The oil filter needs to be relocated. There are no aftermarket headers and the factory manifolds exit into the steering box. They tried mustang, crown vic and SVO versions. Clearance wasn't a problem with the firewall. I don't remember if the shock towers were modified. I had thought about this with my 69, even measured. With the widest part of the motor and the widest part of the shock towers, there was less than 1/2 inch on each side. So if you wanted to lower the engine, you would have to modify.
