Seems to depend on the factory but MCA allows black or phosphated as Charles mentioned.

Now the color coding for the specific spring did differ between K codes and the other 4-8 springs available and installed that year. These would have been a stripe (in a fairly straight line /forums/images/icons/wink.gif from bottom to top of the spring approx 1/2 - 3/4" in wide

Not sure what detail guide your using but be careful there is alot of "odd" information out there based on newer Ford documentation. And even on era documents there can be mistakes... your car is a good example as Ford published a list of identification numbers for 65 suspension parts in the manuals and the TSB only to correct them 2-3 weeks later.
