My dad passed away about 2 years ago and I inherited his car. He bought the car when he was 17-18 and ran it until 1988 and then it got parked in his heated basement. At first we would move it around the yard, then it wouldnt run and it sat from about the time I was 12ish until last fall.
I got the car about 2 years ago, and being frustrated with losing my dad, having a car that seemed to fight me every step of the way, and that I am normally into offroad toys, meant the car sat at my house in my garage for another year and a half or so.
last fall I brought it to my place of work (I am a mechanic) and it took over the dead bay. I swapped the motor to a good 302 I had sitting around. The 289 that was in it had only about 15 minutes of run time on it, but was a dud.
My dad payed a local guy to build him a 289, it took the guy over a year, cost more money than a crate motor, and when I got it in it wouldnt run. Ended up being an issue with solid lifters, that engine builder swears he didn't put in, but dad was never healthy enough to have changed them. the motor had other red flags, like the old waterpump with bad bearings was repainted and put back on, the builder cracked the intake torquing it down etc. So out it came.
I originally wasnt going to make a build thread, but decided it might be fun.
Please forgive the massive pile of pics catching up for the last 6 months. parts of the build are not photographed as I am terrible about remembering to take pics
