My dad passed away about 2 years ago and I inherited his car. He bought the car when he was 17-18 and ran it until 1988 and then it got parked in his heated basement. At first we would move it around the yard, then it wouldnt run and it sat from about the time I was 12ish until last fall.

I got the car about 2 years ago, and being frustrated with losing my dad, having a car that seemed to fight me every step of the way, and that I am normally into offroad toys, meant the car sat at my house in my garage for another year and a half or so.

last fall I brought it to my place of work (I am a mechanic) and it took over the dead bay. I swapped the motor to a good 302 I had sitting around. The 289 that was in it had only about 15 minutes of run time on it, but was a dud.

My dad payed a local guy to build him a 289, it took the guy over a year, cost more money than a crate motor, and when I got it in it wouldnt run. Ended up being an issue with solid lifters, that engine builder swears he didn't put in, but dad was never healthy enough to have changed them. the motor had other red flags, like the old waterpump with bad bearings was repainted and put back on, the builder cracked the intake torquing it down etc. So out it came.

I originally wasnt going to make a build thread, but decided it might be fun.

Please forgive the massive pile of pics catching up for the last 6 months. parts of the build are not photographed as I am terrible about remembering to take pics

the car was very rust free, but had a couple blister spots I wanted to cut out and replace to keep them from coming back to haunt me

Drivers side in front of rear wheel

Bottom of drivers door

Ended up skimming the rear quarters, Must have hauled some interesting things in the truck over the years. No rust but had some very minor dents and dings

A buddy let me use his paint booth. No good pics of it painted, I will take some thins week. Ended up with 2009 mustang vista blue metallic, with a black vinyl roof. My dad always liked the vinyl roof, and it breaks up the car a little. Pics of that to follow as well when I take some.

Lastly, as it sits now, trying to decide on a "shelby" type lights set-up (blacked out hella's)

Or somethong more "1969 esq"

Headlights will be similar to the fogs, and all will be relayed. If I choose second option (69 look) I will be adding a 68 grille pony emblem

Thoughts, questions and comments are always welcomed

Plans for the car:

Get it painted, and put back together, drive it for the summer, and start upgrading suspension.

I have a couple 351w blocks hanging around and dad always talked of putting a 351 in the old girl. I have started gathering some items for build.

Its either going to be a 408w or a 408 "clevor" I have a set of 71 or 72 cobrajet 4v open chamber heads. I also have a set of eagle H beam 6.25 rods I picked up from a friend. Either way its getting stroked. 6000 rpm max, pump gas friendly.

Car also has a brand new TCI street fighter trans (C4) with a Saturday night special converter)

I converted the brakes to kelsey hayes 4 piston units with slotted and crossdrilled rotors, and a power brake conversion as well.

I am planning on an 8.8 swap outback, and eventually doing 5 leaf springs out back with caltracs and roller/tubular everything upfront, hopefully with coilovers. Upgrades will come as budget permits.

Not sure whether I want street/strip or more pro touring yet. The car currently sports 275-60-15's on the back and 225 50's on the front on weld draglites. It looks damn good, but may eventually get 17's or 18's and a bit lower. Time will tell
