We need to replace our rear leaf springs and there are a lot of options. One kit that is a pretty good deal is 5 leaf springs for competition. Sounds like they may bee too stiff. Another place sell 4 1/2 spring that is popular amoung their custormers.

Any Ideas from you folks/ Gonna be a weekend driver with usually 2 people in the car. 271 HP. don't want to drop the back end by an inch. there are just too many options.

thanks cody and pawpaw

I have the 4 1/2 leaf mideye springs, the 1/2 spring is on the front half to help with wheel hop on launch. If you're just tooling around 4 leaf will probably be fine, I think 5 leaf will be stiffer than you want. What rear height are you wanting?
Standard eye will be like stock original - wheel lip ~1.5"-3" above the tire tread
Mideye will be lower - wheel lip ~1/2"-1.5" above tire tread
Reverse eye will put the tires into the fender wells

Mines just a driver also and I just went through this process. It matters on the stance you want so also considering the tires and rims you'll be running. Eaton has a website that walks you through how to decide. Read their process (Eaton Detroit Spring Home) and also give them a call. It can help you decide.

I went for the standard 4 leaf at Eatons suggestion for my vert and am very happy with how it all turned out. Word for the wise: be careful if going with cheaper non US made springs. In my experience, they were too weak/soft and ended up loosing form quickly. The "new" ones I put on in august started to sag (ie nose up) by end of sept. Ended up replacing them a month ago with standard 4 leaf springs (Eaton) - and for what Im running - looks perfect. In this case, trying to save money ended up costing me even more.

On the positive side, since I have 2 sets of leafs (original and recently pulled) - maybe I should make a pair of these.... :)

hope this helps...

I thought about re-arching - but when I called a local shop to do it...the first question they asked was "where were the springs made?"

Apparently ...the spring shop said I'd be wasting my money with re-arching poorly made springs (CJ Pony's BTW - the stock JRS 4 leafs they sell) - so rather than throwing more cash out the window - I went for the Eatons...

Yes, Eaton Spring was the Orig mfg for mustangs. If you want your car to sit correctly then it's important to supply them with specific car info such as coupe, vert, fb, engine. Because the "one size fits all" from catalogs, most likely not give you a stock look. If not looking for stock look then ignore my above staement. I was happy with mine, sits level, same space or each tire front to rear.

I went with 5 leaf standard eye. You can always add a lowering block, but cant go the other direction. I figured the spring will settle a bit. If you are only driving on the weekend, stiff springs shouldn't matter as much. But, I drive a 1 ton truck as a daily driver, so 5 leafs is like a luxury car to me.

Thanks to all of you, it's a fastback 67 and I want it to set a little higher in the back. I am looking for 17 or 18 inch wheels and have found a used set for a good price. the backs are 17 x 9.5 and 4 1/2 inch back spacing so I am thinkins I may go with the 4 1/2 or ever 5 spring. We are running a stock 271 HP 289 so we shouldn't pin it bact too hard. thanks again. Mike

Eaton springs worked out really well for me.. I tossed out the air shocks that were installed before I got the car and run running the monroe sensa trac. its a bit stiff actually but its needed to plant the power for me..

AS said before IF you want a stock stance, then order rear springs from the ORIG supplier, EATON SPRINGS. You tell them your specific car options ie 6 cyl , body style, other options maybe AC, and you'll get spring same as factory did your car.

Hey thanks for the link. I really enjoyed it and they are just right to show my 10 year old grandson what we will be doing before we do it!! I think the length and detail of the videos will be perfect for us. REALLY appreciate it.
Not a problem... I showed most of these to my father during the teardown of my 67 so he could understand what i'm doing when it comes to the sheet metal and bodywork stages. If you have any teardown questions feel free to ask either myself or anyone on this forum really.. I know I ran into some hard spots because I didn't have any type of body manual at all during my teardown. but I learned first hand exactly how everything goes back together.

P.S
the hardest and most painful part is anything under the dash, just be ready for it.
