OK guys, I just pulled the cam out of my 73 Mach 351-C 2v engine. I figure I might as well change it while I have everything else off. I want to put a cam in it that will give me a little thump at idle, but not too radical. I have a Edelbrock performer intake and Edlebrock 750 four barrel carb and flowmaster exhaust on it. I was considering the Edelbrock performer plus cam. It has more lobe and valve lift than the stock cam. However, according to my manual the 351-C 4V and the 351-C-HO has a bigger stock cam than the performer plus cam I am looking at. What gives? Any cam brand and profile reccomondation would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah I know I need headers to complement it all, that's next. I found the passenger side exhaust manifold to be cracked.

If it was mine, and I had to do it over again, I would call a custom cam shop, give him my cars specs, and have one done with a custom grind. There are good ones that are "off the shelf" but why not get one that is made for you?
The other thing I would advise is a wieand excelerator (spelling?) intake and a 2500 stall converter.
Good luck.....Kevin

Modern cam lobe design has much faster ramps (the rate the lobe opens the valves) than an oem cam from the 70's, so comparing them by total duration isn't very accurate. Most comparisons these days use duration measured at .050 lift. That measurement is a much better indication of how big the cam really is. That being said, any modern cam design of similar specs to an older oem cam will perform better due to the faster ramps.
