Anyone ever bought a car sight unseen?

This kind of follows up my other post. Has anyone ever bought a pony from a seller in another state without actually having seen the car in person? Aside from looking at e-mail pics, what else should I be concerned about? How should I close the deal? (money exchange) Having the vehicle transported? etc.

Expect............[color:red]the unexpected!

I bought a 66 unseen, but I had someone I know look at it. Depending where you find/found it; a lot of people from this forum have been very helpfull.
Pictures can't tell if the cowl leaks, or show floor pan condition; or show the car running.
My .02c says to find someone to at least look at it for you if you can't. Also I'd use an enclosed transport.

Buying a car when it is right in front of you is hard enough. You always end up overlooking something. I would try to get a cheap plane ticket (try priceline.com) and go look at the car. Maybe a hundred dollars or two spent could save you alot in the long run. I've also seen guys ask other VMFer's that are in the area the car is in to go check it out for them. There was never any shortage of volunteers, these guys are always willing to help.

Just like the previous poster said, the thought of buying a car that old without looking at it is VERY SCARY! Between the forum, your local car club, MCA or friends/family, you need to find someone to at least look at it for you. It's hard enough to look at one in person and tell what kind of shape it's going to be in when you get it apart. There are services that inspect cars, but they are expensive. I had a family member of one of my wife's friends lined up to look at a car in Florida for be before I stumbled on my car locally.

Just my 2 cents also.
Good luck!

I found my dream car on the Internet. The car I found is in my tagline, but it was in Florida and I was in California. I checked out pictures from his web site, but I couldn't or wouldn't pull the trigger for a car pushing $30K without looking at it first.

I was going to Orlando on a business trip and rented a car for an hours drive to Daytona Beach to check it out. I spent 4 hours going over it. It checked it out and I had it on an enclosed carrier two days later. I had never done this before (and won't do it again - too stressful), but the right car presented itself at the right time.

My $.02....get the cheap ticket and check it out. At the very minimum, have someone you trust who knows Mustangs look it over for you.

I have and I've got 2 words of advice for you: "Be careful". Yes, I looked at pictures, I talked at length with the seller and asked dozens of questions about specifics. I still got burned badly- and by a classic car dealer, no less.

I paid using a wire transfer from my bank to his. I located my own car hauler through an ad in Hemmings.

Again, be careful. The only way I'd ever consider doing it again is to have a friend look the car over for me before comitting.

I got my car without EVER seeing it. Except in pictures. Luckily, I was able to get some of my family to go and check it out. But I had nothin to worry about, the car was rust free. SOOOO, I wouldn't buy the car until you know and trust someone who would be able to look it over for you. But if you buy the ticket, what happens when you decide not to buy the car??? You just wasted some money!!! I'm sorry but if I coulnd't look at the car and I didn't have anyone to look at it for me...... I would pass on it. There will always be another car.

When you aren't lookin for it,
you ALWAYS find it!!!

Yep, based solely on pictures and phone calls with the owner. I am in Indiana, the car was in Pennsylvania. The
owner was regaling me with the long list of flaws and quietly stating all the work he had performed over the last 10 years.
I sent the bank draft, hired a hauler and had it within a week.
Best deal I ever had :))

Purchased a 1973 Q code convertible for my wife this spring in New Orleans. I live in Washington state. I hired a person to go look at the car and appraise it for me. I also had numerous email pictures. After talking with the buyer for over a month I sent a cashier's check via US Priority mail. J. D., who places ads on here delivered the car to me. When the car arrived it was everything I thought it would be and then some. I am very happy with my purchase. I would tell you to proceed slow and find a reputable company to appraise the car.

I've bought two over the Internet. The first was from a classic car dealer in Ohio (I live in MA) so I flew out and back in the same day to inspect it personally. The second one was a private owner in Houston and timing did not permit me to fly out. A VMF'er in the Houston area (rsrace, for those who know him) inspected it thoroughly for me and e-mailed me a detailed report on what he'd found. The car hasn't arrived here yet, but I'm confident it will be exactly what I'm expecting.

Under NO circumstances would I buy a car sight unseen over the Internet. IMHO, you might as well paint a target on your forehead.

I purchased mine after seeing it on the internet, but had my brother look at it for me. He worked 10 blocks away, while I was 4000 miles away. It was exactly what was being represented so I bought it.
