Hi
Does anyone out there know if a 71 to 73 Covertable mustang will stand up to a 429 Engine? I am thinking of building one with a 429 engine.
Thanks Al

it most certainly will. The whole reason these models began bigger was so they could handle larger engines, especially the 429's. These cars (in 71) were offered with a 429 option. NOW, what does your car have in it now? depending on what was in it originally may depend on some of the modifications you will have to do to the car, such as your suspension. Let us know, and we shall answer.

If you do I think I would consider stiffening the convertibles 'flexiframe' by adding subframe connectors. The 429 was an option on 71's. Check out Wagnersclassiccars.com. There are several 71 429's for sale there. Good pics of engine bays for reference.

this is i nice bolt in upgrade, but dont be fooled into thinking a piece of cake, its not hard if you have EVERYTHING you need before you start, motor mounts headers , is it stick or auto, drive shaft, everything is bolt in and there is actually a lot of room the hardest part i found was was getting a set of headers to fit right!

It can be done, I did it with my Mach 1. The engine is very heavy and even with big block springs, the front sits
lower than with the 351C. Headers are the hardest part. There are only a few choices and I haven't found one I like yet. I only have about 2.5" of clearance to the header
flange on my hooker super comps. I would recommend subframe connectors to stiffen the body. The only other problem is traction! It is fun though getting rubber going into drive on a manaul upshift at about 80mph :)
When the car come back from paint, I am going to try drag
radials to see if they help.
