Confusion between white dot and green dot C4

I bought a 1966 mustang convertible in April of this year that has a C4 green dot automatic transmission.

I've got something going on that is not right. Got a whine like a torque converter is going out and the car won't shift out of 1st in green dot. It will shift in white dot from 2nd-3rd (high).

So, I'm trying to have someone look at it. So far, the transmission people I've contacted are saying exactly opposite of what the owner manual is saying. Owner manual is saying white dot is 2nd - 3rd (high) and green dot shifts 1st, 2nd, 3rd (high). The transmission people I've contacted are saying the green dot is 2nd-3rd and white dot is 1, 2, 3.

So, am I reading this wrong? I also understand that some people did a '67 valve body to go 1,2,3 but if that's the case, it doesn't do that in white dot or green dot.

You are reading it correct. Green dot is 1-3. White is 2-3.

However ive seen and heard of many cars where the shift patterns were done wrong when being rebuilt. Shops really seem to struggle with the "green dot" concept. I myself had a car where the green and white dot shift patterns were reversed.

I'll agree. If original, white dot (normal "D" position) is 2-3. Green dot (normal "2" position) is 1-2-3. "L" is first gear only.

If the valve body has been changed the white dot and green dot positions could be changed.

Before my T5 swap, my C4 had a 67-up valve body and I can report the same.

Now, from a drivability standpoint, it doesn’t really matter, as the way a C4 works regardless of green dot or no, once you clear the reverse detent, let go of the button and pull the shifter back. It should stop at regular 1-2-3 drive.

Is this new behavior? The PO on my car has some sort of manual valve body that does this...stays first for one detent and goes through the gears for the other.

I'm waiting for a fluid change to put in a green dot valve body.

No...It's been this way since I got it. I've been trying to get it into a transmission shop but most are months out in work.

What happens if you start with it in low gear and then move the shifter up will it shift then?

shouldn't be able to start in low gear. Nuetral and park is where I can start mine. Might want to check your neutral safety switch.

I'm back. Transmission is worse. In white dot, the engine revs quite some time before it starts moving the car and then finally shifts. I can put it in green dot and it does the same thing (revs before moving the car) albeit a little better with the exception of a grinding/vibration sound and it will not shift out of 1st gear. I now have to put it into low and then green dot and then white dot to go through the gears.
