C4OE
C - 60's
4 - 4
O - Model of Car... this means Galaxy I think...
E - Engine (Part of Car Basically)

so, 64 Galaxy Engine...

the 4E18 is the date... I believe, May is the E, 18th is the day, 4 is what?

the 6015F is the general part # and F being the version.

thsi goes back to a question I have...

I believe my 66 coupe (289) has the stamp C5OE... which translates to a 65 block for a galaxy... now, I know the blocks were the same and that the same casting # was sometimes put in both... but, myquestion is... how can I tell if the motor in my car is the original motor that came in my car?

My grandmother said that someone once looked at the engine in the mustang just by opening the hood... and immediately could tell that it wasn't the original one... how could they tell? it IS a 289 with all stock parts to my knowledge...

IS there really any way to tell?

Decoding the casting # C4OE-6015-F
C=decade, 1960's
4=year of decade the part was first designed/cast.
0=Fairlane/Torino, car in which part was first installed
6015= engine, description of part
E=engine/engineering division of FoMoCo
F= design change. Indicates description of part and/or specific application. My casting number reference guide does not indicate a specific engine for code F. It implies the block could be a 260 or 289 with a 5 bolt bellhousing pattern.
Decoding the date casting:
4=year of decade
E=May, month of decade
18=day of decade

I do not have in front of me the best reference for for decoding casting numbers, Small Block Fords, by Bob Mannell. Click on Amazon on this sites home page to find the source for this excellent reference.

Thank you to everyone for replying, since my car is a mustang coupe this is certainly not the original engine (although somewhat depressing I guess this gives me the green light to go ahead with a 5.0 fuel injection swap)Again thank you everyone for the time.

Whoa!!!!!

Why do you say it's not the original?

If it's because of the "O" in the casting number, don't be so quick to decide it's not the original motor.

The "O" only means the 289 engine series was original to another car line before the Mustang came along. Not that that block necessarily came from another car.

On the front of the block (driver side) just below where the head and the top of the block meet, there should be a machined flat surface about 1 inch wide. There should also be a date code there. That will be the assembly date of the motor. Compare that date to the build date of your Mustang.

This matter is certainly bringing my ignorance to the forefront. I thought that since it was an O that would automatically eliminate it as being the original engine. I didn't realized that ford was pulling engines from other lines to put in the mustang when production started. Could someone please explain a little more about this matter to me. Thank you everyone for the time and patience.

Mine has 5C19F stamped into the front of the deck as the engine assembly date. I understand that the 5C19 means March 19th 1965, but what does the "F" on the end mean? Is it the assembly plant? Thanks.
Paul.

The "F" indicates the factory shift or the individual that was involved in the assembly. The engine tag on the intake manifold usually has the assembly plant code on it.
