Faulty ‘68 Hood Latch; repair or replace…?

Looks like my hood latch has stopped working properly, can’t begin to share how frustrating it was to get this thing open without damaging the grill or hood. Took some finagling but I finally got it…

It seems the hand-hold pivot arm that engages latch lock is worn at the tip. This then cause the latch lock to push away from the tip of the pivot arm. So I’m wondering if there’s any way to repair this thing...or any repops just as good, like dynacorn?

Thoughts…?

I looked last week, didn’t see any decent ones other than a rusty piece of junk and then there’s the repops. So I figured I’ll give it a go and try to repair this thing. 3 hours later…

Drilled out the center pivot pin and resized it to slip out of the frame. I then rosette weld a 16g piece of metal to the arm and then tacked weld the seam around the three sides which resulted in extending the tip a few millimeters. A few minutes with a hand file and blam.

Then just for fun I’d though I’d give a try at quenching/tempering the arm tip so it might wear better over time. Heated up to 600F and placed in oil, then reheated some and let it air cool in the hot sun.

Toughest part was heating the pin so I could duplicate the original pressed in rivet—helps to have a combination of bench vice and 20-ton press. Then filled in the drilled out pin center via mig welder and then dremeled the end to resemble the rivet. Not concours by any means but saved me $75 bucks and only cost me some tinkering time in the garage.

I did find it interesting that the original piece looked parkerized, might have to give that a try with some of my M14/M1A parts laying around so I can restore the finish.
