Well I think my engine problems have finally been conquered. After replacing pretty much everything I could think of and having a local shop assist in the carb tuning (I have no idea what i am doing but am trying to learn) I think I finally emliminated the stutter I had while driving down the highway for longer than 15 mins. So in summary for those who are interested....replaced points w/ petronix I, replaced coil w/ petronix flamethrower, replace fuel pump and fuel filter, replaced fuel tank, and partially rebuilt the carb. I have not had any problems yet (knock on wood) and it seems to be running alot better. Accelerator response alot more sensitive due to carb adjustments so squealed the tires a few times ;)
Thanks to all those who gave me advice. Now to decide what to do next ::

Glad you got it solved. The shotgun approach will work every time if you can chamber enough rounds. Any idea what it was that was causing the problem? As I recall, most everything had been done except the carb rebuild, and you still had the problem. So, do you think that was causing the problem?

The guy working with me on the carb adjustment thinks the main culprit was a sticky float needle....I am still not sure what that is but am eagerly digesting information as it is taught to me. :p I definately think it was a fuel supply issue most likely related to the carb's operation.

There is fuel pressure constantly supplied to the carb. The needle valve/float mechanism is located just inside the inlet to the carb. Fuel fills in the bowl to the extent that the float, mounted on a fulcrum, pushes the needle valve into the seat, hence preventing more fuel flow. It will hold against the low pressure supplied by the fuel pump. If the needle valve isn't holding against the seat, too much fuel will enter the carb, resulting in a "flooded" condition. Does that help any?

By the way, I like the new signature pic! ::
