Can anyone comment on the sound ofthe different flowmaster mufflers used in a dual exhaust setup? I'm looking for a good, low pitch "growl", but without an annoying ear piercing drone inside the car. Looks like the sell a 40 and 50 series delta flow but I'm not sure what the difference is with respect to volume levels.

check out the dynomax raceflow mufflers. i prefer them to anything flowmaster makes. they have a great sound at idle & low rpm's, but unlike the flowmasters, they quiet down to a decent level at higher rpms. the flowmasters i've been around get louder as the rpm's increase.

I have the Dynomax Ultra welds behind the 408 in my '69. I love them. Nice mellow rumble at idle, mild acceleration and cruise. When I put my foot into, though, you can hear them for 4 blocks.

I have a set of Flowmaster 50 series SUV mufflers on my 69. I hate them. The drone in town SUCKS.Not any better on the highway. I will be replacing them in the next few weeks with a set of Ford Racing Performance Products dual mode mufflers.

wow, and the 50 series are supposed to be less noisy than the 40 series, i think. What's the advantage of the ford dual modes?

Anyone using the 40 series?
I'm running 40s on my Mustang and my Tahoe.
I love them. They do drone at cruise, but the ability to set off ricer alarms makes it worthwhile.

To be clear, are you suggesting the welded Dynomax or their racing version which looks more like a cherry-bomb?

In your opinion, what makes the dynomax a better choice than flowmaster?
the one's i use are the "ultra flow welded". sorry for any confusion, they used to all be lumped under the "race flow" name!

my reasoning for using them over the flowmasters, is at cruising speeds, they are no louder than a regular turbo muffler. the flowmasters, no matter what series, get louder as the rpms increase. i can get a good loud "performance" sound at idle & upon acceleration, but can carry on a normal conversation with a passenger at highway speeds & not have to scream.

I have not seen too many positive replies in previous Flowmaster posts. The drone issue at higher RPM is something to really consider before you buy them. If you only plan to drive the car around town to car shows, then maybe Flowmaster will work but if you drive the car on the highway, this is something to consider. Again this comment is strictly based on the threads I have read.

I am running Magnaflows on Red but plan to have Shag sound maybe a little crazier so I am considering Dynomax as well. I'm also looking into Corsa's.

On a side note about Slow..I mean Flowmasters, I read a post recently about someone installing some kind of baffle item into the tailpipe that stopped the drone. Something else to consider.

Very good tips guys! Thanks. I will consider the Dynomax because i definately want to be able to talk to a passenger at highway speeds. I want to hear the car at idle and at low speeds but above 45mph I would like it to "quite down".

On a side note, does anyone know where I can buy an exhaust kit in 2 1/4" so that I can just buy mufflers and install it myself? I can buy a 2 1/4" H-pipe from NPD, but then I still need the rest of the pipes and the only offer such a kit if you buy flowmaster mufflers with it.
I prefer not to have to take the car to a muffler shop to have this stuff made.
I originally bought the concours transverse exhaust kit but hate it and decided not to install it. :-(

I use a 40 series flowmaster on my truck, and I think theyre great. I think the cats in front of it really muffle the sound so I dont get the extreme drone that everyolne else is experiencing

I'm told that Dynomax is a cheaper muffler than Magnaflow. I don't know if that's really true. It's impossible to know what the muffler will sound like until you buy it...and if you don't like it that's a lot of money wasted. Ugh.

I have Flomaster 40's on the boss, and Magnaflo's behind my dad's 393.

I prefer the Magnoflo's, I think they sound much better, and have a nice bark when needed. I don't care for the flomasters at all.

I love my Flowmasters; loud at idle and louder at WOT. Personally I love the metallic sound they make, but it is a personal preference. If you want to have conversations with your passenger at 45 mph, they are not the muffler for you.

One thing to note: Their loudness is also very dependent on the engine. When I had a set on my very mild 289, they were very liveable; aggressive but not obnoxious and little to no drone. On my current engine they are very loud and do drone.

I must be an idiot - I don't see the sound clips for either muffler. All I see is the video clip of someone driving and shifting gears...not sure which exhaust he has.
i wouldn't call you an idiot...but if you read the thread that meyer65 posted, i said that i have flowmaster 40's... with 2.25 inch piping, hedman headers and engine stuff. anyway, here's a similar video. its quite a bit louder in real life...of course.

Had:
Try-Y headers with Dynomax Superturbos with 2 1/4" strait pipes all the way to the back.

Have:
Try-Y headers with 2 chamber Flowmaster 40 Series with 2 1/2" pipe with H-Pipe all the way back. Much Better!

This post is just in time. I just got my brand new rebuilt motor started the other day. Of course kinda loud with open headers. I was going to ask how the DYNOMAX mufflers sound being I found a set on a car I bought that look almost like new. Allready have taken off. These are the oval shaped mufflers that are welded like and look like the Flowmasters. The have DYNOMAX in raised lettering on one side of them. 2 1/2 inch in and out. Sounds like what i'll use. Thanks for the info. Jim PS-- I looked down in the mufflers and they don't have the chambers like flowmasters. They look more like the round cheery bomb mufflers on the inside but do look like flowmasters on the outside. Do these sound like any Dynomax's you'll may have? Thanks in advance. Jim
