The original generator is gone so the alternator is going in. What do I need to do to get this up and running correctly? Would a new alternator harness work at the firewall connection? What about the regulator, does this need to be replaced?

The entire wiring harness is different on 64.5 with generator. You'll need the under dash, engine feed and underhood harnesses to make it plug and play.

If you just want to patch in an alternator harness, the 71-73 cars have a separate harness with plugs for the alternator and regulator that would be easy to patch in.

Have you thought about a 3g conversion? That way just go alt to battery, ditch a voltage regulator but keep the rest.

I found a great deal on a Powermaster alternator that looks like my old generator. It’s rated at 90 amps. I stripped the internals out of my regulator and use it as a terminal block. All looks stock.

Since I've had a fully restored alternator on the shelf for years, this is what I will go with. I did not know a rewiring diagram existed. Will start on that today. Thanks for the heads up.

Any issue with converting to a 1 wire alt from a generator?

Looks like the power for the horn would need extended to a full time 12 volt source but otherwise could likely eliminate the generator harness and regulator?

Has anyone else done this?

That's about the gist of it... although your generator warning lamp will no longer function.

there used to be a one wire conversion kit for ford alternators. i havent found any recently, but i used one when i converted my falcon to an alternator. works fine with a 55amp alternator.

Thanks - I am working on a 64.5 generator car and in order to convert to an alternator, the simplest wiring change is appealing to me.

It seems that an aftermarket 1 wire alternator might be the way to go.....

If you go to a 3-wire you can retain your warning lamp function. They also make alternators in generator housings now, too. Allows you to retain existing brackets, etc.
