While I may run out of money before I get to this point, "upgrade to trac-lok, 3.50 ratio" is on my 'wish list' for a 69 total rebuild. Mild 351W w stock T-5 trans so it is not going to be a strip driven car.
I was trying to do budget based on new trak-lok unit, with new set of gears and then trying to figure what it'd cost to pay someone to set it up, or whether I could set it up myself and not have reliability issues.
Now I've just run across 'ready to install/drop in/ready to use as delivered' 9 inch third members. I'll not mention names as the purpose is to gather info, not start a flame, but nearly all the catalogs seem to have a version where they run from less than $1,000 up to $2,000 (and I'm sure there are some that are MUCH more expensive). Some are catalog names, some are the usual 'aftermarket rear end parts' name brands. They all seem to have predominantly good to excellent 4-5 type reviews with almost all also having a few '1 star, never buy again, run away, whined, burned up, total junk, etc. Most advertise at least one with 'nodular iron'. I have to assume most come from non-USA assemblers, but can't swear for certain. I know there will be some advice to just buy the pieces and put in the existing assembly and that's valid as well if it make sense and I'm not going to hose it up?
My questions are:
-Has anyone bought one of these units?
-Any experiences good or bad?
-Are they all coming out of same factory somewhere? (They sure look the same with exception of castings in the 'brand' area on the member.)
-Any thoughts?
