How do I remove the F O R D letters.....without screwing up the paint? I'm finishing up sanding for the repaint and don't want any gouges in the current paint. I know one thing, a couple of hours of hand sanding is enough to whip my old ancient arse. :frown2: I am wondering if I just pry them up from the topside or pull the barrel nuts off the underside? My dang DA sander bit the dust about the time I was half way through. I really forgot how much work that tool does compared to hand sanding. Picking up a new one tomorrow to finish.

The barrels push in from the front and lock in, so no pulling them out from the back. You might try a plastic wedge to slide under the letters to pry them out.go work each side out a little at a time so the pins don't get too out of line. The letters just press into the barrels. At least my 67 was that way.

It was about 15 years ago when I painted the new hood and put the pins on. I could not remember how they went. Thanks for the info.

I used a stainless thin flat bar, I slid it just under the letters and then pushed a bondo spreading tool (one of my favorite go to protectors for painted finishes) between the flat bar and the sheetmetal.
You have to steadily pry it until the pins let loose or break off (happened to a few of my letters and side emblems).
Just have to be careful not to exert too much force against the sheetmetal which could cause it to dent and distort a bit.
I've never tried the fishing line/floss idea.
Anthings worth a shot.

Wouldn't have thought dental floss would have been strong enough for that, hell, I break it off in my teeth all the time...........

I got them off using a combination of fishing lined and a small screwdriver. The line will pop up the corners a little and then the screwdriver to gently ease them out. My "O" is missing one of the pins. I guess it got a little crooked and applied too much F=Mass x Acceleration... in per-second per-second of course. :frown2: All of that = need new O...it's always something with a mustang.

Use some double sided 3M tape to put the "O" back on.
I used it on my "N" when I broke the pins off on my trunk (no I am not an elephant) cut a piece of the tape off and put it on the letter, cut away the excess tape with exacto knife, peel of the plastic and stick it back on

That's a good idea and I have some of that, thanks.
