I'm curious as to whether Rally Pacs should be color keyed/matched to the interior of the car or simply black finish as I see most of them for sale. I've seen red and a tannish/offwhite color on units in cars. Were these owner painted/finished or...? TIA.

Thank you. I was wondering as I checked Ehay and there's several on there, all black finish. But I've seen a few that were different colors. I wonder what all would be involved in buying a black one and painting/finishing...hmmm.

If the crinkle finish is in good shape, you can simply topcoat a black one. Make sure you do light coats as you will lift the crinkle if you get too heavy.

Also, keep in mind that the insides of the rally-pacs where the gauges are remains smooth and black. The way you do this is tape the area up, paint the exterior, turn the rally-pac down on a smooth surface and paint the black from the inside. Touch up the color on the edges when you're done. Use flat black on the insides as the purpose is to keep glare off the instruments.

Thank you for the tips, Charles, that's very informative. I wonder if the repro's (Drakes) are color keyed? I understand they should be available shortly?

Kelly,

Like Charles said, best for you is a low profile pac, parchment with the inside flat black. I redid mine recently. I was never able to get a consistent wrinkle finish on mine, tried several times. In the end I went with a smooth finish, didn't really like the wrinkle finish anyway. Nothing else in the interior has that finish except maybe the AC unit. Drew

On my low profile RP I got a very correct finish with Krylon Wrinkle finish paint that I "cured" in a warm oven. Should of seen SWMBO's face when I pulled the cookie sheet out of the oven with car parts on it! ::

The wrinkle paint can't be directly color coated with lacquer (or you will have BIG wrinkles) so I primed it with gray primer first. Then sprayed inside of bezel with flat black and let dry a week. Taped in the inside flat black off and sprayed the color coats on the outsides and brackets. Pulled tape off inside and flat black paint stayed on! Charles suggests another way of doing the flat black.

I'll PM you some pics this evening... good luck! ::

You learn something new every day.

I thought that 65 "high profile" RPs were always black, and 66 RPs were painted to match the interior.
