It uses a NLGI #1 grease that you can only get from the dealer. It is, Motorcraft XG1-C steering gear lube.
The Corvette boxes use the same type grease, GM #105218

Ya, me too, theres actually lube in there? Man, we learn something everyday here! How do you tell if its low and how the heck do we fill it??

It holds 0.97lb of gear lube.
The Filler plug is on the main body of the gear.
Remove the filler plug and the upper cover bolt.
Slowly turn the wheel to the right to the right stop and check that the lube rises to the cover bolt hole.
Now slowly turn the wheel left to the left stop and check that the lube rises to the filler plug hole.
If the lube does not rise to the hole in both locations you must add the specified type lube.
have fun...

I agree with SuperCJ regarding Motorcraft XG1-C. It can be purchased from the local Ford dealer.

SuperCJ,

Just rebuilt my unit on our '66 and opted for CV-2 synthetic grease. I was not aware that there was actually a single purpose Motorcraft grease for this application? What are the general characteristics of the Ford grease? Just got the unit back in of course!!!!

Red Line CV-2 is a NLGI #2 grease it is a higher viscosity grease.
For grease: viscosity is equivalent to hardness,it is determined by measuring with a penetrometer. The test drops a weighted cone into a sample of grease. The depth the cone penetrates into the grease determines its hardness, or NLGI Grade.
NLGI ASTM
Consistency No. Worked Penetration at 25°C
NLGI Grade..stiffness rating = to
000.................. 445 to 475... ketchup
00.................... 400 to 430... applesause
0...................... 355 to 385... brown mustard
1...................... 310 to 340... tomato paste
2.......................265 to 295... peanut butter
3..................... .220 to 250... vegetable shortening
4.......................175 to 205... frozen yougurt
5.......................130 to 160... smooth pate
6........................ 85 to 115... cheddar cheese spread

a grease is oil held by a base thickener or gellant
made from a powdered base.wax,soap,clay. Moving parts like ball bearing or gears squeeze the oil out of the thickener oil complex to lubricate the parts.
many greases are" lithium complex" lithium is a soap type thickener. the specific type of oil used in the make up of the particular grease is also important to consider for its intended lubrication use.
For our steering boxes using the NLGI #1 and #2 greases
the analogy of #1 tomato paste to #2 peanut butter you would then have to agree that the #2 is far thicker than the required #1 grease
i am sure this is more than you wanted to read or know

Greg,

The more the better! Thanks for grease info. Initially affter reading the above comments I thought I would have to R&R the unit again to replace the grease used.

Happy cranking!

I am confused about the upper cover bolt. Where extacly is this bolt? I beleive there are several bolts on the cover.
