Dilemma is, I just installed the Borgeson power steering box on my 65 from a manual box and notice the rag joint is right up to the firewall. Does anyone know if the ididit column will fit with this setup. I wanted the tilt column for clearance since I'm 6'2", but worried about the mounting point at the firewall. Asking before I cut the original column, which appears I need to take about 4" off.

Thanks.

im using a flaming river column. Mine is 30" which puts it at the stock length. Upper dash mount seems to fit ok- prob. will need a piece of rubber around part of it to snug it up. The lower has no mount. Flaming river sells a large swivel mount-to fit any angle- for a couple hundred dollars. I decided to make one for mine. A piece of tube alittle larger than the column, welded three nuts to the tube around the outside after drilling holes, then put a bolt thru the nut to lock the column in place inside the tube. Cut the tube at the appropriate angle- 20degrees in my case- and welded it to a plate that i made using the original rubber dust shield as a template and cutting the center with a hole saw the same size as the tube. Bolt that to the firewall, install column.
They sell the joints that fit the column and you can weld/bolt in place your shaft from there. From what i understand, Ididit and Flaming river both make columns based on GM column design, so be prepared to get a hub adapter for your wheel as well. Then you need to adapt the wiring.....i havent gotten that far yet.

I just did this. Ididit makes a column that is 1" shorter than standard that fits just fine with the Borgeson unit. The steering rod is designed to fit a Mustang steering wheel.

I used a tilt column part number 1120644010 and followed these instructions to mount and sea it against the firewall. Using those tips it came out airtight and mounted as strong (or stronger) as factory.

I have a Lecarra steering wheel and hub that I used with my old Mustang column and the same setup works for for the Ididit.

Hope this helps and let me know if I can give any more info,

Again, thank you. Both are very helpful. Tdc, nice to see the headers were not as big an issue as others have said it would be.
Shannon, that is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Your build looks to be very similar to mine, minus the vert. Great "build" site.

I wish I could take credit for the site. It belongs to a member on the board: HyePo66.

Except for the wiring (I'm using an American Autowire kit), I followed HyePo66's instructions to a tee. However, I used a jigsaw to cut out the brackets instead of a laser cutter. :)

Let me know if I can help further.

Teflon tape on brake lines is a no-no and unnecessary. Those fittings are compression fittings. As you tighten the nut down it forces the double flare of the tubing against the fitting causing it to seal. You never use a thread sealant with any type of compression fitting. The only time you use it is with something that uses tapered pipe thread.

I'm not sure if this this helps  but here is how I have it done on my 66

Tdc, did you use the shortened original column or something else? I'm thinking about doing this to get more knee room. Raising the firewall end of the column and using u-joints.

Sorry the "manage attachments" feature isn't working for me this morning.

Interesting Shannon, I just did the Borgeson upgrade using the same IDITIT tilt column and I barely had clearance for the coupler. I used a coupler vs a rag joint because its 3/8" shorter than the rag joint. If I move my column any further inward, I'll be inside the cab. I have maybe a 1/4" of column at the bottom of the column extending into the eng compartment. (66 coupe)

Groho,

Yeah mine was pretty tight too.. It just barely fit. I guess the bottom of the column was about even with the firewall.

I'm learning this now myself, as the column is just shy of the firewall (inner), using a rag joint.

BTW, I really like the idea of the tube extension that Xboost built above. Easy to build, and will provide added room to move the column to make room for a the rag joint. I'll keep this in mind if my coupler transfers too much vibration to the steering wheel. So far I haven't heard anyone complain about using a coupler vs a rag joint for vibration in the steering wheel (as long as the column and box are properly aligned).
