I attended the hudson valley mustang clubs vintage car show this weekend & while I was not sure of the catagory they placed me in, I came home with 2nd place plaque.
the car show was the largest turnout they had ever had, over 200 cars I think. all styles from mondel A's to bmw "erkle" mobiles. I was placed in the modified mustang class, this class lumped all the cars with modified setups in it from 64's along with fox bodies, roush mustangs, foose, etc . I was a little bummed by the classification but I was like ah, whatever. It was my first car show entered & it was nice seeing all the cars & meeting felow VMF'ers. It suprised the hell out of me when my name was called for 2nd place.
on the way home I stopped at a guys body shop that I plan on using in the future, he remarked that the price I paid for doing my GT was a great deal, a real great deal.

Congrats. Always nice to pull a trophy when you do not expect it.

I was real happy that the classic cars were the winners in that category, althoug hthere were a lot of newer mustangs 79-2006, only a 65 coupe, my 65 conv & a 67 FB won trophies, 3rd,2nd 7 1st place.
the mustang best of show was a 69 shelbty GT500, real nice car.

it is really messed up that someone can drive a car out of a showroom(rous, foose) enter it in a show & win a trophie next to guys thta spend years building up a car from rusted metal.

Yep, I know what you mean. I have seen that several times. I have picked up 8 trophies since Apr. 1st, this year and it really suprises me of some of the winners. Seems they need a class for the one who spent the most without touching the car. lol

With comments like that , I wouldn't be expecting to get "a real good deal" from him !
yes, i was thinking the same thing!!
it is a shame, he does fanaminal work but it is at a price

The reverse of this is the 200 car show that I entered my '69 Boss 302 in this past this weekend.
There was a great mixture of cars from rods to antiques to muscle, though it was noticably Chevy heavy.

Mine was the only Boss or Shelby car there and while at least 10 Chevelles were among the top 50 plaque getters only two Mustangs were recognized. A 66 GT coupe concours car and a 68 Fastback.

There was a brilliant Porsche Speedster and a beautiful Studebacker Hawk there, neither of which got recognition either.

The show thing is an interesting experience. It certainly doesn't pay to put much effort and expectation of return on effort into the show part of your Mustang habit.

That is for sure. Congrates on your trophy.

Messed up. That's a good way of putting it. But I am not sure what to expect. I wonder at non-Mustang events whether the judges even know what a Boss 302 is. I would certainly doubt they would know what a "K" code means.

At the show I went to this weekend there were two GTO's and at least 30 Chevelle's. 10 plus plaques and trophies when to the Chevelle gang while the nice GTO's got skunked.

I suppose its easy to have expectations when you bring a very rare car to some of these events, but sometimes the rarer the car and the more general the audience the more difficult it is.

I took a just finished '75 Baja Bronco by Stroppe to Carlisle's Bronco 40th anniversay event. The Baja is to Broncos what the '65/66 GT 350 is Mustangs. They made 650 total. Mine was the only one. Nothing.

One day I may understand it, but for now I am satisfied meeting new friends and taking pictures of kids sitting in my ride for fun and trying to forget there is a competition at hand.

That is very, very true. Having chaired or co-chaired a few car shows, I have seen the "behind the scenes" stuff and know, first hand, how political they are. In the show that I chaired, my '66 took 2nd place in the '65/'66 modified category ... it shouldn't have. It was voted for many times by people that appreciated my efforts in putting on the show, not for the merits of the car compared to the others in its class.

Go to any club sponsored show, and the club sponsoring it will go home with the bulk of the trophies.

It's because of these things, that I like to just go to the shows to let the general public enjoy looking at the cars, meet up with friends, and make new ones. I rarely even attend the awards portion of any show.

All that said, CONGRATULATIONS, STANG32!! :)

Congrats, it is fun to win! You just can't expect much from popular judging or entrant judging. Look around at what most folks are driving, there are your winners. If you are sitting in a sea of imports or Chevys you have to expect that those are what this crowd likes. It's still fun to see and be seen, everyone likes to see a nice Mustang like yours.

Congrats on the trophy Stang32 - it was well deserved!

It was actually 164 cars but it was the most the club has had in 24 years of having the show. Normally they get about 100. Loved some of the older cars that showed.

As part of the club I ended working and didn't get to enjoy it as much as I wanted.

Your car is really nice and it was great to meet you. Hope to see you at another show soon and we can talk some more.

I posted these pics in another topic but here are pics from the show

A note on this comment "Go to any club sponsored show, and the club sponsoring it will go home with the bulk of the trophies."

I don't know if that's always true. And it shouldn't be.

At this show we did a participant voting setup and club members were not allowed to vote at all.

In the 67-68 class where my Cal Spec was entered I thought the club member next to me deserved one of the top 3 awards in that class - there were 5 cars in our class and he and I didn't place. That doesn't bother he or I because we're in if for the enjoyment, meeting people etc. Don't get hung up on the awards thing or you don't enjoy it. Just my 2 cents.

As a matter of fact only 1 club member won an award at the show and that was the Best of Show Mustang. That Shelby belongs to one of the club members and he often wins Best of Show awards. It's a nice car. I'm considering using the shop he used when it's time to get my car done. And it's local what's better than that? :)

Congrats again loved the car when I first saw it drive in for registration! Great color!

I was at this show and can attest to Paul's very clean GT. The guy who won the modified Mustangs 64-73 had a lot of time and money in his car, but it wasn't to my taste. Paul had alot of classic cues with the R valance, shelby stripes, and clean pony interior. Custom candy colors and blacked out trim w/ tinted windows don't work on the vintage iron, but that's what won and just shows why anything can happen in popular voting.

Sorry to hear about the trooper on the way home, Paul. Find out the town you need to appear in, then go to that locale and hire the "used-to-be the-judge-but-is-now-a-lawyer-in-the-same-town" guy. He probably goes duck hunting with the present judge. I beat a 108MPH speeder this way 2 years ago in a two-bit town. It cost me $700 but I considered that a bargain after points and the reckless and what the insurance co would have done if it had stuck. Good luck.

Ken,
Saw your car at the show real nice! Sorry we didn't get to meet.

Paul,
Didn't know about the trooper, sorry to hear that. :(

ah, what can you do, I was dumbfounded by the trooper. he did nto want to know nothing. I wanted to tell him of the other law enforcement officers am close to, he would not give me a chance. now i have calls being made left & right. hopefully I can get something done. even if that does not pan out, I really do have an issue with my speedo, I was telling ken earlier that day. I just did not know it was that far off. I was in a pack of cars, why he singled me out, I do not know, maybe it was the car. well I have ot find a cettified NYSI shop with a dyno, let them run the car & see just how far off the speedo is. I am figuring about 15-20MPH. funny thing is, the slower I go, the more accurat it is. well we shall see.
thanks for the kind words. & your right, the carthat won was way out of place between mine & kens. it was more fitting for a fox body .
flared fenders, kicker sound system, etc.

Congrats on placing! It was good to meet you and put a face to a handle. I was so busy working I didn't get chance to look at the cars after they were parked, but I did get quick looks at them as they came in to register. As Rich said we had a good mix of cars in 18 classes and it was participant voting so " beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Voting was very close in all classes with several firsts having dominant vote tallyes. With a few exceptions, most everyone had a good time(I didn't hear any complains); good weather and nice location. We actually started to run out of room on the show field, triple parked a few classes( Corvettes come to mind). We needed to carefully unstack them at the end of the show lol.
I went to a regional ACCA show in Pencylvania on Sunday with the '66 vert(didn't place there either) :D Out of 6 cars in class, 5 were verts. We just enjoyed the day meeting people we had met in passed years and talking to spectators that had questions. If you go to a show with the mind set to enjoy the cars and the people a trophy is a pleasant surprise.

Not in my club, and not in my experience. What I have found with participant's choice shows is the person with the most friends often wins, or the red car. But many times, the right cars win, too.

You also have to think of what the Judges like, as in what company type. I don't think a lot of these cars show's are actually judged fair... but hey, a lot of us are just out there to have fun.. i know i always am..

Again, it depends on the club. With my club (and others that I know), when the judging sheets come in, they are reviewed. If something looks wrong, the head judge will go back out and see what the problem is. Believe me, I know the cars entered in my show and I have a pretty darn good idea how they should place. When it doesn't happen, I want to make sure that it's a valid reason.

I know all clubs don't operate this way, and it's a shame. I stay away from those shows, unless I'm just putting the car in as a display, and with a 68 coupe, that's usually all it is.

as foir the person w/the most friends statement, I agree, there were only a handful of shelbies & the 23rd place winner had no rights to the award. he had a 65 with incorrect seat, missing stripes, incorrect roll bar, undetailed engine bay, an aftermarket shelby trunk lid & end caps along with 68 styled tail lights.
totally out of place.
this car beat out a real real nice 70 shelby conv.
I was very shocked at this but the guy had a lot of friends there.
