What year Ford AOD will fit to my 68s' 289?

Do I need any adapters?
Different cooling lines?
Driveshaft length?
Can I still use the existing shifter?

Also..What's my old C4 worth?

Thanks

i would look for '93 aod. they are the strongest and some come with a 2 inch overdrive band.

i made my one gaerbox mount and made new lines and used the aod shifter from a thunderbird, but there are ways to use the stock shifter. i used the stock c4 driveshaft.

I got my AOD from an 89 F150 (2wd). You'll need a few parts to make it work:
adapt or buy new cooling lines
the driveshaft is too long so I got a shorter yoke to compensate (you can also cut yours)
AOD block plate
correct torque converter
new transmission crossmember
correct flywheel
Throttle Valve linkage and shifter linkage - you can use the existing shifter.

Mustang Monthly has a decent article - just search for AOD swap.

Also, I got $200 for my C4 with the torque converter, new filter kit and misc parts.

I was going to do an aod, but after doing some more reading, I'm going to do a 4r70w instead. Checkout Baumann Electronic Controls they have a lot of really good info on aod's and aode/4r70w's.
+1, going the same route. Got the trans back from FB Performance about 4 weeks ago, just need to get the motor finished and we'll be good to go.

If you don't mind me asking, what did your tranny cost you? I'm trying to find someone to build me one, but I'm not sure what kind of price to expect. Are you just using an aod suport and mount as well, or are you going to use something different?

In CA I paid about $750 to rebuilt an AOD for my 65 Fastback (built for about 370 HP). However, now I'm going with the 5.0 Coyote and must change to a different transmission. My wife says to sell my the AOD and 302 with EFI, but I say with the price of 65/66 coupes so low, why not just buy a car w/o engine/transmission (80/20 that the wife wins this one).

For the mount, I went with a Ron Morris Uni-Cross, fits perfectly.

As for the rebuild, you better sit down. I got the trans from a friend that owns on of our larger junk yards. No charge...actually I gave the guy that loaded the trans into my truck a set of magnum wheels & tires for his 67 Mustang.

With FB I went with their Pro Street package plus a new stub shaft for my higher HP requirements, 11" L/U converter, new solenoid pack and a HD yoke - $2800. That includes a run on the dyno.....never saw a trans dyno before. Trans is good for 500hp.

Could I have done it cheaper, no doubt yes. But he is one of the best. He was recommended by a friend that is running a 1005rwhp Z06 with one of Freddy's transmissions FB Performance Racing Transmissions - Chevrolet, Chevy, Buick, Olds

Thanks for the info. I've seen what the lentech's are going for, so the price doesn't really surprise me too much. I may give fp a call when I'm ready to do mine, they sound pretty legit. Are you going to be using the baumann controller, or does fp offer their own solution?

Like the other have said try to stay with an '89 or newer AOD transmission. If you read up on it there are several modifications that can be made to the AOD using AODE or 4r70w parts. If you dont plan on putting alot of power through it a stock AOD with a good rebuild can usually handle 400-450hp max.

You will need a shorter driveshaft and a different mount like the others have said. Different cooler lines as well. Depending on whether or not your transmission comes from a car or truck the shift selector lever could be in the wrong orientation and might need flipped 180* (should be pointing up). Look into getting a constant pressure valve body so you do not have to deal with setting the line pressure correctly and no TV cable. Silver Fox transmissions is another good option for a transmission and will be a little less money then a Lentech with similar quality.

Thanks for all the replies.
Unfortunately I'll have to go with the C4 for a while (when I do get the car done).
Money is too tight right now and this is something I can upgrade at a later date.
I appreciate the info.
Freakin gas prices are draining my wallet and I refuse to drive a rollerskate with windows!
