Sounds like upper control arm. Is the spring pad at the top worn through? That's all I got.

 

Shouldn't be the pad, less than 1000miles on it or so.

UCA have 2500miles on them and I pumped them full of grease a few months ago. I can see the grease coming out the other side when I look from underneath.

I suppose I Must disconnect the spindle from the LCA and try moving the LCA independently. I'm just afraid I won't be able to feel/hear anything that way since it won't be loaded as it is now.

Normally I'd agree with the UCA but I can only feel in the lower, but as I said, that may not mean anything.

 

Are the bushings and spring pad urethane or rubber ??

 

+1 on the upper control arm. I chased a similar noise in our car.

 

My car is doing the exact same thing. I just discovered last weekend that it is the strut rod at the heim joint in the front!

 

What do you mean exactly? And how 'exact' was the sound/feeling?

(Interestingly, I can feel it in the front of the strut rods as well. So I can feel in the front fo the strut rods, and the LCA... Not so much where the strut connects to the lca.. Odd!)

 

I...... Do not recall! Definitely not urethane... MAY have been this 'fake' material called Midolyne that doesn't actually exist in real life, so I can't be sure what it is.. I can't even recall if that is what i bought or not!

As for the spring pad, do you mean at the top? Also cannot recall, but we can assume worst case urethane.

But it sure feels and sounds as if it has to do with an up/down movement, not a 'rubbing' sensation.

 

I had a similar noise any time I went over a bump. It turned out to just be the sway bar bushings where it bolts to the frame. I threw some axle grease on there and they've been quiet ever since.

 

This ^^ Easy place to check too.

 

I would start disconnecting things IE: shock, strut rod etc. and see if the noise disappears.
If not try loosening the bushings. the fact that you can feel it on the LCA makes it a candidate for close inspection once the strut etc is eliminated.:|:cheers:

 

Ugh, I hate disassembly.. 1 hour drive time to 10 hours maintenance. hah

(The reason I'm hesitant to say it's something simple like a sway bar to frame bushing, is because you can also feel each creak while pushing down on the fender.. Each creak has a tiny bit of resistance, if you dig what I mean).

I laid on the ground feeling different parts while my fiancee bounced the car up and down. I went from coil to LCA to strut rod to rod end where it was the most amplified. After that it was apparent.

Strut rod at the heim, was it the heim? Was it the threads at the heim? (The only original part of my strut rods attach to the LCA.. The front is round threaded tubing, and then a heim).

 

You need a helper to move the car up and down while you man the stethoscope to determine the exact location.

 

I tried yesterday. Stethoscope was inconclusive. Damn thing is like a big speaker.

 

I had a similar noise. Hard to figure out exactly where it was. Mine was the strut rod bushings. Wasn't that hard to replace.

 

Unbolted lower LCA from spindle. Definitely appears to be coming from the strut rod rod end. WHich is.......... odd?

It's the heim on your strut rod. $10 says you used a QA1 XM series joint...

 

Looking through receipts, QA1 X Series. Does X count as XM? If so, I'm not taking that bet!!

 

Yep, it's definitely the rod ends. Change them for a suitable different model.

 

Hmm, the strut rods I bought from Shaun a LONG time ago have never made a sound. Would have never guessed that one.

Can you please post some good pics or a better video of what you are using for your strut rod/attachment. Did you purchase your rods/heims as part of a kit or did you piece it together yourself or ?

What would cause this failure. Do the heim joints you mentioned have some type of defect or ?

Im looking at having this type of adjustable/non rubber bushing setup on my 68 and would like to understand whats going on here.

The XM series had a known bad batch that caused this noise. We don't use them so no noise. :grinning:

Holy Smokes Shaun. I pulled my strut rods apart and low and behold QA1 Heim Joints!!! A little motorcycle chain lube seemed to help, but one felt a bit worn out already for sure. I'll have to find some suitable replacements later this summer.
