I have got a bad case of the "while I'm at its". I have decided since my whole drive train is out to see about adding some beef to my whimpy 8" rear end. I am upgrading my engine enough that I think just adding some gears will not be enough.
I am thinking the easiest and least expensive solution is to just buy a center section all ready to go like this one on Ebay
8" 4 pinion POSI Center Section
Weight is an issue as I have 5 leaf mid-eye leaf springs and the car already bottoms out on bumps so adding more weight like a 9" rear end would not help me. Also, I have the older "less ribbed" version of the pumpkin so I want to upgrade it to the 67 type with "more ribs"
I talked to Denver (fellow VMFer) a while back and he had a solution also for around $750, but he is out of commission now and I cannot remember if he offered a whole center section or not for that price.
I would like opinions on this (chime in JohnPro as you just did something similar I think). Is this as easy as it seems? Drain it, pull the old chunk and put the new one on? Can this be done with the rear still on the car or should I pull it first? What rear end fluid and friction modifier do you recommend?
Man these "while you are at its" are killing me financially but I figure do it now while the drive train is out and also do it right the first time.
Remember, this is a weekend cruiser. It will have a 302 with 4 speed Toploader. Fly wheel horsepower will around 300 - 320. 3.55 gears seems to be the best choice.
