VSS Sensor / Speedo Cable - How to make it work?

You are correct, while the ECM has no control over the tranny the VSS does provide speed input to the ECM and is used to adjust for deceleration. Leaving it off can lead to stalling, surging etc when coming to a stop.

That being said, I bought the conversion cable from Ron Morris for about $60 and was done with it...
