Hi,

My engine is sucking air from either between the intake and the carb spacer or between the carb spacer and the carb... or maybe both.

The parts store gave me two of the same gasket. One for between the spacer and carb and one to use between the spacer and intake. They are paper thin gaskets and I think one or both of them should be thicker for a better seal.

What are the correct gaskets for this application? Do I need something thicker or is there supposed to be some sort of silicone applied?

Thanks for your help,
John Thomas

They don't need to be thick and should be applied with no sealer. Check manifold, spacer and carb base to make sure they are flat and true. A long flat file can be used taking precaution where the filings go. If you have an aluminum spacer you could have a hole corroding through it.Also make sure carb nuts are torqued correctly and evenly.

They don't have to be thick, but they shouldn't be as thin as a piece of paper; as was pointed out make sure everything is true and torqued to correct specs. The ones on my carb are as thick as 4-5 pices of paper.

If everything seems to be in correct order try starting the car, letting it idle, then spray some starting fluid around the suspected area of vacuum leak. A change in idle indicates you have found the leak. Of course I'm assuming the car at least idles :D
