Don't want to go concourse, but just a nice color match for thses parts would do it for me. The bellhousing on my '69 Mach1 came baremetal from the factory, but i want to paint it. So what should i go with ? The casting number which is C5AA-6394B, i think it is cast iron.
Also would like to know the top-loader tranny should be painted what color ?
And last, what about the shifter body, and rods ! I have a D0 Competition plus Hurst shifter kit.
Thanks

I am sure that Charles will be along on this but when we did my '65 K GT we just cleaned up the aluminum bellhousing and left it a nice clean natural aluminum finish like original, I have been advised to NOT sandblast it as this will take away the natural texture of the aluminum.
Not sure what to suggest to clean it with as my restorer did this.
The transmissions were, from what I understand phosphate & oil finish from the factory, some folks elect to use the cast-blast in efforts to duplicate the phosphate & oil finish which most folks cannot do because of licensing nessessary for the use of the phosphate.

Don't you think a color to match the exterior or the same color as the engine (Corporate Blue) would look nice since you don't want to go "concours" ? Same goes for the trans - that way you are using a common color to unify you car and the over all look

But if you would like to go concours (this is that section of the site ;) first confirm the metal you bellhousing is made of (aluminum or steel) then find a matching rattle can and give it a light coat once it's cleaned and prepped. Cast blast or a similar product will work find for the cast iron and a flat aluminum will be the closest you will find in a paint to reproduce the aluminum. IF you were going further you would want to them sand the machined surfaces and apply a light coat of matte clear over it to protect it

As mentioned above some believe the cases were phosphated though I have not seen any test results to support this. Simple short answer is to just clean and rattle can the whole thing - linkage and all. If you want to get it closer to looking concours (in a rattle can) then the cover should be painted a bare steel (stainless steel rattle works here) Shot the case and extensions with Cast blast, then a light coat of either Phosphate paint or Charcoal interior color. Again you would sand the machined surfaces then clear to protect

Are you trying to make these look more like what would have come on a 70's or no painting them a darker color just to hide them a bit might be the goal

Thanks guys for the replies. Jeff, what i'm trying to duplicate colorwise is of a '70 shifter, tranny and bell. I converted my car from auto ( FMX) to 4 speed Top-loader and found this tranny sitting in a guy's barn for close to 20 years. Couldn't pass on such a find. Tag was there ( RUG-AW ), original shifter, levers, rods and bell...but from a '70 302, whether it was from a Boss or not, i'll never know. So this is why i'm trying to match as closely as possible that of a '70 Mach1, even though mine is a '69.
I don't do MCA shows, so i should be ok.
Thanks for the great input again.
