I'm in the middle of making sure that the carb is nice and tight like "tiger". I've been getting the same dead engine thing over and over again. It's not heated coil or bad connection but that doesn't count out the coil. It's a blaster SS that is mounted under the shocktower bar. I might have problems with my MSD 6a that is causing the instant dead engine. The box had recently had a run in with the garden hose and my little brother so I took it out, left the box right side up and left it inside for the night . It wasn't driping with water but I was playing it safe at the time.

i'm pretty sure that the water didn't hurt it. Let it dry . all the boards are coated.
Is the engine running for a little bit then dying? Then not cranking. If so I would look to the dizzy and the hall effect switch. Mine had a crack in the mount. The car would run for a 1/2 mile then not crank. Let it cool then crank up. Run 1/2 mile then die. :: So after i swapped coils I looked at the dizzy. Bingo. MSD box was perfect.

Any speed shop in your area that sells MSD products should be able to test it for you free of charge. Most likely, its not the MSD controller, but a bad connection, or another part such as the coil.

99.9% of the time if the MSD box goes bad it will do it without any hesitation. It just quits and never works again until repaired or replaced. I would check the coil from your description.
I agree. I was cruising at 45mph / 3000rpm with the family when the car just flat died. Popped the hood and the burnt smell came from the MSD 6AL. No warning signs... nothing.

I replaced it with a Mallory HyFIRE IVc ( 2 step with dip switches instead of chips for the rev limiters ) and am MUCH happier. I hated that MSD wanted me to fork out more $$$ for the rev limiting chips. ( Had an MSD 2 Step too ) I tried the rotary box that allowed adjustment from 6000ish to 8000ish, but it puked VERY shortly after I installed it.

However, My MSD Blaster II seems to still be ok. ;)

my msd box took a dump . one day when i went to start it, it just never did, no warning signals, it just flat croaked

MSD is almost impervious to water damage, as he is coated internally to resist moisture. Coils flat quit when they die. What kind of distributor do you have? Points or electronic? If it's a Duraspark, I've seen the magnet crack and cause the exact problem you're describing. Replacing the stator (12A112) is the cure for that one. If it's a point set-up, could be condensor or a ground issue, but not probable. MSD will intermittent to fail on occasion, but more than likely it will just die, as the bloody capacitor gives up it's ghost.
