What's the difference in z-bars?

Can someone tell me what the difference is between a 6 cylinder z-bar and a V-8 z-bar? Is it the length of the bar or are the "arms" different, too? Can I make my 6 cylinder z-bar work in a V-8 swap? Thanks.

Here's my instincts...

Since your car had both a 289 and 200 available in the same chassis, IIRC, the frame mounting point for the Z bar is the same...that means that the point it mounts onto the block is the same longitudinally in the car...
Since the pedal is mounted the same in both vehicles and the parts book calls out the same upper rod for both, my instincts are that the arm lengths are the same. There is a different lower rod for the I6, probably due to the different length of the engine....

Knowing Ford, I'd bet dollars to KrispyKremes that the equalizer (Z-bar) is the same for both engines.

At the very worst, you'd have to get the V8 Z-bar, which is inexpensive and easily obtained....looks like you'll definitely need the V8 lower rod...you should be able to use the upper rod over..

Hope this helps a bit..... and no waiting in the drive-thru...*G*

The 351W has a wider crankcase area than the 302 so it makes sense that the tube wouldn't fit...I believe the 250's still had the same width crankcase as the 302 in the other poster's scenario...

One of the pivots for the Z-bar mounts on the block and, if the block is wider at that point (as the 351W is), then the tube would need to be shortened....

Shortening the tube is possible if the ends aren't stepped to take the pivot bushings...that will depend on who's made it...

The repro Z-bars are pretty cheap so, if yours won't work, a correct item won't break the bank...

Thanks for all your input, folks. I think I'll see what things look like when I get the 6 cylinder out, hopefully this weekend. I'm using an 1988 block with 77 heads, etc. I have the adaptor for the z-bar and hopefully things will work out OK. We're just about ready to do this swap and just trying to get everything together. At this point, money is becoming an issue, with me and my dad - we're both about tapped out, but should be OK to get it finished. If anyone has any other ideas on this z-bar thing, please let me know. thanks, again.

A friend gave me the z-bar for a 6 when I was doing the C4 to 4 speed swap a few weeks ago. There is a difference in the two. If I remember right the engine side of the bar is longer on the 6 than on the 8. I went ahead & bought the V8 one. I didn't want to have the transmission ready to go in & the bar not hook-up. It's got to be the same on the frame side of the bar. If it wasn't it wouldn't go in the hole on the firewall.

I don't think you'll be able to modify the 6 cyl bar and make it work. The main problem you'll come against is clearance for the steering gear box.
You'll have to cut the bell side lever off and reweld it in a different spot. The bell side lever will still be to long and probably throw your pushrod at a bad angle. I'd say find the right bar if you can.
Hope this helps.
