I am in a very lucky situation. I recently graduated from college and my uncle has quite the collection of “barn cars” that are actually in a large building on his farm. He has offered me the choice of 2 cars and I really don’t know which one to pick. I have been hem hawing around for the past several months, lurking here on this forum looking for information, and I think he is ready for me to make my decision. I thought I would ask the experts here and ask opinions of which one you would choose and why.
Car 1 is a numbers matching (title, window tag, door tag, VIN, engine, inner fender) R code ram air, Automatic, Fastback. It is NOT a Mach 1 (63A). It is a Mach 1 Clone as the interior has been upgraded with a Mach 1 Interior, Louvers and Spoiler added. He told me there were only about 600 Sportroofs (non mach’s) with the 428CJ produced in 69 don’t know if this is true. Car is original except interior and other options listed above.
Car 2 is a non numbers matching car that has been pieced together well. Title, door tag,(inner fender number different) and window tag state that it is S code (390). It IS a Mach 1 (63C). However, it does not have a 390 but has a correctly dated 428CJ with a 4speed transmission.
Both cars are complete and could be driven out of his barn with minimal work (battery, clean fuel, maybe a hose or belt, etc).
Both cars need restoration but there appears to be no rust on either as they have been store inside in Kansas for over 30 years. Cost wise to fix them up would be about the same.
He also offered me a 72 Mach 1 351 that is similar condition as well but I am really stuck on one of the 69’s. They are just so much nicer looking IMO!
Anyhow, I plan on keeping and restoring the car I pick for a long time. I would appreciate any of you thoughts, ideas, opinions and what you would do and why if you were in my situation from everything including parts availability to value to ??.
Thanks,
Brian
