Pulled two sets of rear axles out of 65-V-8 (289) mustangs yesterday. The shaft size (left and right) on one car were much bigger in diameter than the set in the other car. Anyone run across this before. Any info appreciated. Thanks. James

There is a small bearing rear and a large bearing rear. My guess is one has the small and the other has the large.

Although the Ford parts manuals show them to be the same part number, in many cases, the 8" axles in 1966 Mustangs are slightly bigger in diameter than the 1965 axles. Bearings and all are the same, just a lot of the later cars had axles with less taper off the splines than others.

actually ALL 65's came with the crappy "raw forged" axles. the other set was likely installed after the first set broke. early in 66 they started using the heavier, "finished" axles. they were also an over the counter service replacement and I'm sure dealers had to replace MANY of the early weak axles with the later ones.

FYI for 64.5-73 mustangs there is only ONE bearing size for 8" and 9" factory housings. and it is actually a "medium" bearing. "large" bearing housings are FULL size car/truck and the "small" bearing is used ONLY in the 7.5" rears used in 6cyl. cars. just trying to weed out some of the common falsehoods... ;)
