I have a '65 with a 289, 3 spd. Whenever I start off in 1st gear, my engine rattles and the whole front end shakes for the first few seconds. If I am on an incline, the problem is magnified. Is it my tranny? Is it my engine?

When I had the defective Detroit Locker installed, the whole front of the car would shake like a son of a gun when I turned a corner, unless I had the car out of gear. Even pushing in the clutch did not relieve the front end shake. I don't know why it did this, but the problem went away when the trac lok was installed. What happens if you take the car out of gear when the front end shaking happens? Do you have a posi or open rear end in the car?

sure it's fun (most of the time), but it's only a car.

It only shakes until i get moving, then it's fine. On an incline it shakes so bad, I had the car die on me when I was stopped on a hill, once I was stopped and tried to get going again. I'm not sure about the rear end

You could also have a bad pressure plate. Like said you should resurface flywheel and put in new pressure plate also. Clutch disc's are so inexpensive I would go ahead and put one in since you have it down anyway. Jim

It does sound like clutch chatter.

The previous guys are correct about your clutch but there are also other causes of clutch chatter such as:
1/ Bad motor mounts
2/ Bad transmission mount
3/ You have a 65 and those motor mounts are more prone to chatter than the later style. If all else fails switch to the other mounts.
4/ Misaligned or flexing bellhousing
5/ Flywheel not level.

Good luck...
