Since the car is back in storage for awhile and the weather is BRRRR Cold, I need something to do on the project while in the comfort of the old home...

I've been thinking about the wiring harnesses on the 65 coupe for a long while, as it is the next project to tackle. Big question is: Salvage or Replace? If I had the $1200 or so to replace the harnesses, I would do it in a heartbeat. Since I don't have $$$ for that, I'll need to inspect and repair the exsisting harnesses.

My question to you is sort of a poll. What did you do to salvage your wiring harnesses and what things do you watch for when inspecting them???? And...where do you obtain replacement connectors??

I have several good wiring diagram manuals to help out. So I'm considering laying out the harnesses on a floor, as they would be in the car and inspect every inch of wire for cracks or breaks. Replace any broken wiring and figure out how many and types of connectors that need replaced. The underdash wiring will be the biggest challenge since it ussually gets kluged the worst. Also check all the wiring for continuity with the tester. Then rewrap the harnnesses with new wrapping.

If I have the wiring system laid out on, say, the basement floor, it would give a good visual of the entire wiring system. Plus I can make some of the simpler harnesses, if necessary. Since I'm mounting a 66 dash gauge cluster IPO the old 65, I can route the new wiring prior to installation in the car.

What do you guys think? Any help on the topic would be much appreciated and may help others. Thanks again.

You guys are right. If it weren't soooooo coooooollllllllddddd, I'd run to the mustang salvage yard and pull some harnesses...still may. I think it would benefit to have a spare set laying around for "parts".

Thanks for all the help everyone! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif After cleaning up the sewer backup disaster and eating T-giving dinner (no appetite), I still found an hour to troubleshoot and mark the connections on the dash wiring. It is actually in better shape than I thought with very little butchering outside the usual. All of the connections are still intact and I discovered I'm missing the wiper switch. Never had it. I'll post this to my favorites for reference. As for the $1200 harnesses??? Another mustang buddy claims to have spent close to that to replace ALL his wiring, clips, and some of the switches in his 65 coupe. His has the washer pump, AC, pony lighting, ralley pac and center console, which all the accessories added to the $$$. My underdash harness is definately salvagable though, so thats good news.
